If you enjoyed our fundraiser this week, then it'd be great if you came and joined us on the 3rd August for a full day across Tyneside's lost railway - the Riverside Branch from Newcastle to Percy Main. A day full of coal mines, shipyards and PINTS! 🍻 northeastheritagelibrary.co.uk/event-details/…

Evening! It’s such a big shame The Cyprus at South Shields has the boarding up, closed after some 140 years of trading even before this structure was built. The first references to the pub are from the early 1880s, when it was both an inn and a hotel. The name will very likely…

The roads to the staiths. The two tracks at left were owned by Hartley Main Colleries. We are looking totwards Seghill.
The grand total is in! This year, we have raised a massive £1480 for Hadrian School, supporting SEN kids in Newcastle with everything they need to thrive in our amazing city. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who donated and all those who followed along 🙌🙌

Enjoying the Sooth Sheelz local history info - got a couple of pics from Westoe rd I took when the church was demolished in 2007 & car sales operated there 2012.
It seems Westoe Road was the spiritual boomtown of South Shields given the sheer amount of churches down here. I suppose as the town grew, this was the best spot for vacant land when they looking for new pastures! Just down the road were two more from the Unitarian - the…
Just a few clicks down the way is this stunning little chapel (I know I can be too hyperbolic sometimes, but look at it!!) This church, featuring gorgeous layers of decorative brick giving it some real texture, was the home of the South Shields' Unitarians. The Unitarians had a…

Morning! South Tyneside is a bit of a catholic stronghold in the North East. Less so because of Bede and the like, but more the industrial migrations along the river in the 19th century. This is St Bede's Catholic Church on Westoe Road, a very impressive Gothic Revival build…
Morning! I've added the Crook Rescue Station to the website as its own entry, making it almost our 400th piece on the library. This was 1 of 3 built in Northumberland & Durham after regulation made them a necessity - another in Houghton is a carbon copy. northeastheritagelibrary.co.uk/features/crook…

Another stunning shot from John. It was only 20 years prior Gateshead quays was laden with shipyards and coke ovens as seen below. The Hillgate Quay railway featured a line hauling up to Oakwellgate via a very steep incline where the Sage is (shown on map below).

What is possibly our last heritage walk of the year is happening on the 3rd of August. I’m incredibly excited to take a group across the whole of Tyneside’s lost Riverside branch to Percy Main. If you fancy something different on a Sunday, come along! northeastheritagelibrary.co.uk/event-details/…
I wrote this about the statue of Britannia (pictured) some years ago. The last I heard, it was in the pub’s back yard.
