Keep the Door Open I noticed my 7yo son do something unusual at a recent game, something he has never been ‘taught.’ This thread will attempt to highlight why viewing skill from a lens of emergence can keep the door open for stronger skill acquisition. 🧵
“Basically nobody teaches this swing, but I don’t think you can. He has personal physical traits that make this all possible.” Every player is different, every swing is different. Why holding on too tightly to ‘technique first’ can hold players back. ⬇️ open.substack.com/pub/nicksmallr…
This insane super slow motion video of Scottie Scheffler’s swing has my head spinning. The top position is madness. I never noticed just how insane his width is. His left arm actually bends a lot. The crazy right foot jump is still insane, but it comes later than you think.…

With the US youth soccer (6-12) season about to start, here are a few challenges for coaches: #sundayshare #coaching #soccer
What started as a way to journal my thoughts on skill, learning, and coaching has continued to evolve, and it’s time for the Substack to have a name: “Keep the Door Open” Read more ⬇️ 🔗 nicksmallridge.substack.com/p/keep-the-doo…

The art of destabilization isn’t just speed,it’s the attacker’s ability 2 manipulate the defender’s perceptual framework.. The near-post run forces the keeper to adjust laterally while also tracking the ball,, a dual-task scenario that overloads their perceptual system..🖖🏼⚽️
Destabilize: @atheeneeaa_10’s Diagonal Dribble After winning possession, Athenea dribbles diagonally, right at Bonmati, forcing the defenders to close. Bonmati shifts into space for Athenea to play the ball through. Cheeky dummy and near post goal.
Two great points here⬇️ from Nick that apply equally to hockey: one, drive diagonally towards a D on the rush and look nearside to shoot. In both scenarios you add uncertainty that destabilizes the D and the goalie. Aitana read the goalie perfectly.

2v1 | Pressure is Behind the Attacker ⚽️ Created On: @SSPlanner Aim: ➡️ Breaking fast when presented with overloads. Set-Up: ➡️ 25 by 25 space with a 5-yard shaded zone. Each team has a pair of mini goals to attack. Add a coned gate for each team to use as a start point for…
U10s Preseason Day 4 🔹2v2/2v3 🔹Breakout Box(3v4) wide areas 🔹3v4 With only 7 players today, had to adjust a bit. In the 2v3/3v4 open play(goals for the underloaded side counted 2x). In the breakout boxes- focused defending higher up the pitch- ‘Press’ or ‘Protect’?

Pro tip for parents sending kids to a skills trainer or coach. If there’s no offense or defense, everything is against air, and a lot of cones/hurdles are involved, just pack it in. These have ZERO transfer. There polar opposite of what takes place in a game. This is why free…

🚨The Myth of Muscle Memory🚨 Possibly a controversial take, but one that impacts how we view skill and development. And what does MacGyver have to do with coaching? A bit of light reading for this Sunday afternoon. 🔗 nicksmallridge.substack.com/p/the-myth-of-… @SundayShare10 #SundayShare
U10s Preseason Day 3 🔹3v3s 🔹Get Out of It: 2v2 🔹5v5 For the 2v2s we added in *high press* and *low block* challenges for the defenders, and how to read the defense for attackers. In the stoppage clip below, I definitely need to tighten up my coaching cues.

The Myth of Muscle Memory: Skill isn’t stored. It’s assembled on the fly. An important distinction that impacts how we view development. Read more below. ⬇️⬇️⬇️ 🔗 open.substack.com/pub/nicksmallr…

This is a brilliant piece. I’ve been reading several on your blog and I’m a massive fan, really good stuff. I’ll subscribe as soon as I can.
100% .. Movements are not stored as rigid pre-programmed patterns, but emerge from dynamic interactions between the performer, task, and environment. Variability isn’t just useful it’s the only way skills work in real life.. Stop coaching technique;;,, coach the problem..⚽️🖖🏼

Excellent post by @nasthe3rd “What looks like clean, repeatable technique is really the visible trace of an adaptive process- shaped moment by moment by interaction.”
