Good morning from my sisterβs wonderful garden in Park Ridge (outside Chicago), a wonderful break from the oppressive heat of Florida.
In South Florida, it's not "If you build it, they will come." It's "if you build it with shade, they will come."
New master planned community in NE Florida. Small rights of way, no street trees planted. No one mowing their yards, washing their cars, walking their dogs, or playing ball with their kids. Too hot! #moreshadeplease

Summertime in FL, bearable with a pool and a little shade and a beer on the way.
βPalm trees provide shadeβ is one thing you hear from people who donβt object to the continued overuse of palm trees in NE FL. Itβs 95 degrees in this parking lot today.

The power of SHADE: Two recent local outdoor music events were Jacksonville JazzFest and Memorial Day concert in Memorial Park - both super fun.... and hot! These photos display the inherent value of TREE SHADE, and how we need more of it in our public gathering spaces βοΈππ³

Bay Kings Band at the Memorial Park Memorial Day concert. Another example of how the shade and cooling of our mature oak trees allow people to enjoy the experience! Not one has chosen to sit in the sun.

At the Jax Jazz Fest yesterday, a very hot day in FL, people gravitated to the shade of a few large oak trees in the tailgater lot. If we want people to come to an event, park or business, we need to keep and finding ways to plant more large canopy trees!

Modern infrastructure builders are obsessed with brighter and whiter lighting when the answer is always soft and warm, like here in Philadelphiaβs 30th Street Station
Which street would you like to walk along in summer?
The difference between a street with an amazing tree canopy and one without is night and day. In NYC, the value of street trees amounts to $122 million annually.
