After I did a story on understaffing in the Labor Department's unemployment division a year and a half ago, every few months I get an email from a New Yorker who can't get through to get their benefits desperate for advice. I wish I had an answer for them.
Kyra is one of dozens of constituents my office has helped to get UI benefits this year. The single most common reason people call me is that they qualified for UI but can't get through to a human at @NYSLabor. Something has to change! @jul1arock nysfocus.com/2025/07/14/new…
New story on James Dolan's adventures in campaign finance: He and two affiliated PACs have spent over $140K on DA Alvin Bragg's independent challenger, Diana Florence. Yes, there's a facial recognition angle to this grudge. amny.com/law/msgs-james…
this man does not understand ranked choice voting
Mayor Adams casts his vote at PS 81 in the Democratic primary. He said he’d vote for “Eric Adams 1-5,” writing himself in instead of casting his ballot for one of the candidates (he’s opted out of the primary). I asked if he’d vote for @OsseChi, and he shot a v skeptical look
In Wolcott, NY, a farm that refused to bargain with its union is now refusing to follow a contract reached in arbitration. It's one of a few contracts NY farmworkers have won since they gained the right to unionize in 2019 -- and a big test for the state labor board.
“The officers spearheading the bid to oust Gresham this spring say his effort to cling to power is one reason organized labor has faltered: leaders prioritizing their own interests over the needs of dues-paying members.”
While America’s largest health care union scrounges for crumbs, its president has for years used union money to benefit himself, his family and political allies. Inside the union’s lavish spending👇 politico.com/news/2025/04/0…

NLRB's Acting General Counsel just send this memo out to staff saying, "I cannot promise you that everything is going to be OK." "I know that the past few days and nights have been extremely scary and distressing for some of us."
In my 3 years covering CM Vickie Paladino, my peers have asked me constantly: “Is she actually crazy?” When I tell her this, she laughs. “I love it when they ask that.” She may be the future of the GOP in NYC. My cover story debut for @CityAndStateNY: cityandstateny.com/personality/20…
“The central challenge at Amazon, for Teamsters and independent unions alike, is how to build a durable organization in a workplace with an annual churn of 150 percent. Organizing there can be like building a sand castle” Great reporting and analysis.
ICYMI: Here’s my assessment of the Amazon strike with an informed analysis of challenges and opportunities. It’s going to take a movement to organize Amazon. The Teamsters are part of the addition in the formula. But more is needed. labornotes.org/2025/01/amazon…
I am out here at JFK8 in Staten Island where a large group of @amazonlabor workers have walked off the fulfillment center floor on strike.
NYPD out here in Queens doing Amazon’s bidding by roughing up and arresting workers who are standing up for themselves. The @Teamsters have a right to strike and our police should be protecting them, not Jeff Bezos
"The state Workers’ Compensation Board has cited the New York City Law Department, which runs the city’s insurance program, for legal infractions over 10,000 times each year since the pandemic." OVER 10,000 TIMES. New from @mwparrott for @nysfocus nysfocus.com/2024/12/19/new…
Did you know that NYC operates its own workers comp insurance carrier for city workers? In fact, it’s notorious in this capacity. The city mishandles and delays more cases and wage payments for injured its workers than any other employer in the state. nysfocus.com/2024/12/19/new…
