Prepping the @microbialoceanW ISMI for final deployment to 1000m at superstation#1 #DY180 @biocarbon_nerc
The Microbial Oceanography Vienna group is wishing everyone a joyful holiday season filled with discovery, curiosity, and inspiration! May your experiments be successful, your data insightful, and your holiday moments magical.๐

We welcome our new lab manager, Theres Koch. She completed a MSc in Ecology and Ecosystem at the @univienna, where she focused on cnidarians and corals using techniques like video microscopy, live particle tracking, and machine-learning algorithms.

Michael Mattner successfully defended his master thesis, exploring "Decadal change of physico-chemical and microbial properties of the North Altantic deep water and adjacent water masses." Congratulations!

๐ New publication in @NatureComms indicates that microbes are doing better than other marine organisms under ocean warming. ๐ doi.org/10.1038/s41467โฆ

๐ New publication by @Zhao_MicroOcean et al. in @NatureComms revealed that the taxonomic origin and expression pattern of the marine microbial protein pool is size fractionated. ๐doi.org/10.1038/s41467โฆ
๐ก Master Thesis opportunity at @GEOMAR_en GEOMAR - Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel.

@marinelena96 and Chie from @microbialoceanW deploy their in situ microbial incubator (ISMI) up to 1000 m and measure microbial activity with a fluorescence dye at in situ hydrological pressure.
The Microbial Oceanography course 2024 successfully took place from 12-24 May at the Marine Biological station in Piran, Slovenia. Twelve students participated at an intensive field station experience implementing experiments and measurements on microbes and algae.

Two MOVie group members, Marilena and Chie, are joining the @biocarbon_nerc project onboard the RRS Discovery hosted by the British National Oceanography Centre @NERCscience. The research cruise DY180 started today from Southampton and heads towards the Central Iceland Basin.

A great lunch gathering for chinese tasting of the Microbial Oceanography Vienna group to celebrate Zihao's (@Zhao_MicroOcean) publication in @ScienceAdvances.

๐ New publication in Science Advances by Dr. Zhao et al., dealing with the size frationated substrate preference of marine prokaryotic community living in the water column. ๐ DOI: 10.1126/sciadv.adn5143

The Microbial Oceanography Vienna group celebrates the great achievement of Professor Herndl on securing an ERC Advanced grant for the upcoming 5 years. We are looking forward to delving into the marine snow world at greater depths!

Gerhard J. Herndl has received an ERC Advanced Grant for "NEREIDES" project to explore marine snow in the deep sea and reveal unknown aspects of the marine carbon cycle. microbial-oceanography.eu/detailansicht/โฆ

Successful completion of the training workshop on "Protein extraction of environmental samples" instructed by @MaryPapadatou & @microbialoceanW. MoVie group happily hosted Benjamin Pontiller from @GEOMAR_en and members of the @univienna Bio-Oceanography & Marine Biology Unit.
