Wicked line of thunderstorms pushing through Kootenay Lake right now, making for a rather frightful & interrupted camp out at Kokanee Creek Prov Park. Winds sound like a freight train, camping gear got thrown around on what was expected to be a calm, warm night. #BCwx #BCstorm
We anticipate a challenging three-day period for the Dawson Creek, Fort St. John and Fort Nelson fire zones, beginning June 6. Expect local wind gusts of up to 70 km/h and extreme fire behaviour. Conditions may change rapidly – please stay informed: blog.gov.bc.ca/.../forecasted…

We are currently deploying crews and structure protection resources to the #GrandForksBC area in advance of the Goosmus (N62564) wildfire. This wildfire was discovered in the United States on Sept. 25 and is currently estimated to be 200 hectares in size.
Fire behaviour has increased on fires within the Ootsa Lake Complex. The Sabina Lake wildfire (R11204), located S of Ootsa Lake and about 80km S of Burns Lake has organized crown fire behaviour and breached containment lines on the E flank, burning to the NE, towards Ootsa Lake.
August brought a mixed bag of precipitation across the province. Notably, Cranbrook went from zero rain in July to more than twice its average for August. ☀️🌧️ #BCStorm
One of two large fires burning in Van right now. Grey plume indicates heavy water being applied which is great.

Paraphrasing Dr. Sarah Henderson - there is good fire and there is bad fire but there is no such thing as good smoke. Lots of smoke and air quality issues today - GOES geocolor below (grey is all smoke) Purple air map below as well map.purpleair.com/1/mAQI/a10/p60…
Cough, cough, the smoke season has arrived 😷#BCsmoke #BCwildfire

A small upper low is moving through parts of the Southeast Fire Centre increasing lightning-caused wildfire activity. As this storm is coming with minimal rain, fires are being detected quickly.
Following 14 days with max temps >30C, #NelsonBC is getting peppered with lightning. Not surprisingly, 7 new #BCwildfire in the past hour. Happy to water bombers already working their magic.

The new reality of wildfire in BC. Now that area burned has passed 600,000 ha the area burned in 2017-2024 has burned more area than 1950-2016 (67 years). Of course, the 2024 fire season is far from over.
In addition to heat, be alert for thunderstorms across the interior today (July 10)! Lightning, coupled with persistently dry conditions, may increase wildfire activity. Follow @BCGovFireInfo for wildfire info. #BCStorm ⛈️
A cold front is forecast to sweep across northern B.C. tomorrow, generating strong winds, thunderstorms and dry lightning potential. New wildfire starts are anticipated, particularly in northern regions. We are prepared to respond to new wildfires and increased wildfire activity.
