I wrote about what 28 YEARS LATER teaches us about death, love and co-existence for @NextBestPicture, unpacking Boyle and Garland's digital provocations and disarmingly emotional horrors. One of the best movies of the year: nextbestpicture.com/lessons-from-t…
it's pretty undeniable barbenheimer hugely boosted awareness and helped the box office, but that kind of thing is an opening week or two flash in the pan; OPPENHEIMER almost hit a billion because it legged out like crazy due to word of mouth.
can we all be honest? oppenheimer wouldn't have been as successful as it was if it weren't for barbenheimer phenomenon. it earned almost $1 billion. a standalone release would have fetched 300-400 million at most.

I’ve been reading ALL-STAR SUPERMAN (it’s excellent) and came across this panel that resembles Gunn’s wide-angled deep focus aesthetic in SUPERMAN. It doesn’t really work for me but I admire Gunn’s attempt to capture comic aesthetics on film:

Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s thrilling CLOUD is in theaters now. For the New York Times, I wrote about what connects his eclectic filmography from CURE to CHARISMA to TOKYO SONATA, and more. A treat to write about one of the most fascinating filmmakers working today. Link in first reply.
hope all of you are having as fun of a weekend as my old man

relieved to hear the random movie they attached to the trailer for AVATAR: FIRE AND ASH is apparently okay
starting to think this tweet was irresponsible because I am almost positive many of you are going to fucking hate EDDINGTON
uh oh I liked EDDINGTON, aka NO COUNTRY FOR WOKE MEN, where Aster dreamcatches every partisan paranoia into a suburban absurdist nightmaria with mask jokes. this isn’t both-sidesing so much as restaging the insanity of the 2020s to riotous extreme. some surprisingly solid action!
