PJM's Capacity Auction (BRA) for 2026/2027 just cleared at the cap for the entire market. This comes on the heel of Google's recent procurement of hydropower capacity in PJM, signaling no end to Big Tech's insatiable demand for datacenter power.
New forecast from the EIA estimates that wholesale power prices are due to jump 12% this summer with natural gas as the main culprit. PJM’s hot summer with NG as the main generation source is driving most of the increase. h/t @grid_status for the chart
Good illustration of how much the Texas grid has changed in just 6 years. yellow = solar; purple = batteries; dark green = wind; blue = gas; brown = coal; light green = nuke via @grid_status
🔥This week saw 72 hours of extreme temps in the Eastern US — here’s how they impacted electricity prices in 60 seconds. It was a clear reminder: summer risk isn’t going anywhere, and cooling for those new demand centers only gets more difficult as temperatures rise.
Today was #2 all-time for batteries & #4 all-time for solar in ERCOT, per @grid_status. Demand exceeded 76,000 megawatts, well short of the June record, but those batteries were needed as 15,000 MW of gas & coal plants were offline today. Rare to see this many outages in June.
The @grid_status snowflake DB is so powerful. This query gets every generator's output (MW), resource node price ($/MWh), and therefore revenue for every SCED interval in 2024... in 3.5 minutes. Any visualization requests?
This is the fuel mix in ERCOT (Texas) for the past week (top) vs same week 4 years ago (bottom). Solar generation is in yellow. Solar barely registered in 2021; today it accounts for roughly 50% of generation during the day in the shoulder months. data via @grid_status
Basically how we’ve built @grid_status Postgres + echarts is a hard to beat combo

It's becoming increasing clear the BESS are the marginal units. Prices slow thier climb for a brief moment before continuing to climb as BESS discharge falls off. This will drive longer durations. Price formation in ERCOT is fundamentally changing-get an optimizer who gets it 😤
Look at this billboard as you enter West Hollywood 🤣🤣
Earlier today, zero-carbon generation was the primary power source in every market we track on @grid_status

Both NYISO and ISO-NE import millions of cheaper MWhs per year from Canada. With just 10% tariffs, this price advantage is nearly eliminated. Both NYISO and ISO-NE import millions of cheaper MWhs per year from Canada. With just 10% tariffs, this price advantage is nearly…

Massive congestions out in West Texas this morning leading to huge geospatial volatility. You can see West Texas batteries changing with north batteries discharging at the same. About a GW on each side. This is virtual transmission in action
