that Adorno's quote about cinema leaving him 'stupider and worse' gets bandied about as evidence of him being a laughable curmudgeon has always struck me as cruel and unfair, because its context was life in LA under the shadow of the holocaust; now some of his most urgent writing
Just…….
Yes. In November 2023, I did not think that intent was clear. But I also argued that the question of whether it was or wasn't had no policy implications because starving/terror bombing civilians in service of regime change is no more permissible than doing so as an end in itself
Fellow travellers who've been there for the entire journey now getting out at the final stops, pretending they didn't know where this voyage was headed all along
I don't know, just thinking if Bari Weiss is panicking there are probably - at minimum - much worse photos than we have seen yet
why do I need two-factor authentication to log into my online account to book an appointment at a hair salon
Kind of obsessed with Switzerland’s postage stamp made with cement pigments that’s a tribute to concrete.
Bizarrely, no mainstream outlet had yet covered this possibility, so I wrote it up for Obsolete. A judge certified a class action representing up to 7 million copyright-protected books that Anthropic pirated. api.omarshehata.me/substack-proxy…
Anthropic could be bankrupted within the next few months, thanks to last week's barely covered legal ruling, which exposes the AI startup to billions to hundreds of billions in damages for its use of pirated, copyright-protected works.
I think a lot of that “neoliberalism invented an entirely new mode of subjectivity where we are all metaphysically entrepreneurs of the self” stuff was a distraction from what was really going on at the time. But you do see it in the people who’ve never known another way to be

that’s right!!!!!!!!!

The reason there were a lot of legitimately good Christian heavy bands in the 90s-early 10s is because evangelical churches built a lot of social infrastructure to support late 20th century American suburbanization, and it gave kids places to put on shows and hang out
the real physical environments music culture used to arise out of were cool neighborhoods that weren't too expensive to rent in, places to go see shows that weren't overpriced and haunted by surveillance. that's what the zoomers are missing out on, not mediocre curators
One of my favourite moments in a Mike Leigh film is in High Hopes where they go to Marx's grave and quickly become outnumbered by a throng of Chinese tourists
Taken with the Chinese student letters at Marx’s grave. There are a few.
Very telling that these are all director-driven projects that would have likely been carefully planned and prepared in advance, rather than hastily re-made in post-production days before the film opened by executives frantically reacting to test screenings and social media.
CGI in the 2000's looks better than most movies today
Wow. In under 24 hours, 200,000 people have signed up to build a real alternative to poverty, inequality and war. Something special is happening - be part of it at yourparty.uk.
