I love the Ethiopian in Acts 8 A spiritually serious man, he had made a long journey to Jerusalem to worship, was reading Isaiah on the way home, but he happy to admit that he didn't understand it What an good model. Knowing & worshipping God makes us hungry to understand more
Being a follower of Jesus means: * knowing the love of God * worshipping him * following Jesus as king * learning to apply the good news of his resurrection, rescue from sin, and his being alive to every area of life * conducting ourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel
Excellent Lacking obvious metrics of success it is so easy to fall into a bigger-is-better mindset. I mean you can’t argue with more people becoming Christians, can you But let that become the defining factor of “successful leadership” and too often things go badly wrong
The more I care for people, the less concern I have for increasing the size of the crowd, while the more I work to increase the size of the crowd, the less caring my ministry becomes. Does anyone else in pastoral ministry find that to be true for you? karlvaters.com/caring-or-coun…
I love some of the descriptions of early believers in Acts: * Those who belonged to The Way (remember Jesus saying "I am the way, the truth & the life") * Those who call upon your name Becoming a Christian isn't a terminus. It starts us on The Way, calling on the name of Jesus
I get why Bible publishers like to divide up the text into chunks and insert descriptive sub-headings But for many readers it has the effect of getting us to read piecemeal rather than contextually I wish the publishers would also add outlines that show structure & connections
In Acts 10 God took Peter to Caesarea to help and his household became Christians This despite the fact that another mightily used witness, Philip, lived in Caesarea. Why not just send Philip? God sends the right people to reach whoever he wants regardless of geography
In Acts 8, preaching the gospel v25&40: = proclaiming the Christ v5 = preaching the good news of the Kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ v12 = testifying and proclaiming the word of the Lord v25 = telling the good news about Jesus from scripture v35
When a church is delighted in Jesus, that church is going to stand firm. Not because they are stoic and resilient. In one sense not because of anything to do with them. But because we are captivated by a mighty, beautiful saviour who has a firm grasp on us
Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant Philippians 2:5-7
A friend just pointed out that as of today we are closer to 2050 than 2000 Arbitrary though this is, it still doesn't make me feel better Except for one thing: the grace of the Lord Jesus is reaching more and more people, causing thanksgiving to overflow to the glory of God
The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases. His mercies never come to an end. They are new every morning
If you want to get involved in what God is doing, then pray & let Jesus’ words abide in you He said “apart from me you can do nothing. But if you abide in me, & my word in you, you’ll bear much fruit that will last” (Jn 15) Everything is of prayer and abiding in him. Everything
