Crap. I was off here. The book does start in the mid 1890s, but goes into the 20th century. Sorry! It's been a while since I read it, and it is written through the perspective of someone living in the 1890s, so I remembered it as such.
Can we ever just have a War of the Worlds movie that takes place in the 1890s like the original story? It always has to be a modernization for some reason. Does no one want to see aliens fuck shit up in the Victorian era?
