I am reminded in this moment of the anniversary of the Freedom Charter. Commemorating 70 Years next week, we are reminded that it proclaimed the right for all to have access to “houses, security and comfort.” Our task here is to make that a reality.
In partnership with Gift of the Givers, essential donations including blankets, toiletries, groceries, and diapers were donated to displaced families. This support is part of ongoing efforts to provide dignity and immediate relief to communities hardest hit by the recent floods.

We will tomorrow be in the Eastern Cape Province, responding to the suffering of our people who were affected by the recent floods that ravaged parts of Mthatha, and Buttterworth. Claiming the lives of many people, displacing hundreds more and destroying homes.

Today I stood at the Freedom Square Monument in Bongolethu to honour Andile Majola, Fezile Hanse, and Patrick Madikane, young freedom fighters killed by the apartheid Riot Unit on 17 June 1985. I did not come only to hand over houses but to fulfil a solemn duty of remembrance. l
