Szabolcs Kókay
@kokayart
I'm a natural history illustrator and wildlife artist.
I had a very adventurous May, starting with 2 incredible weeks in the Copper River Delta area in Alaska, then a pacemaker implantation in Hungary! In the coming days I will share more info about the former. Back in work, scanning my sketches from Alaska.

I've started a new art page on Bluesky: bsky.app/profile/artkok…

Hungarian Birch Mouse (Sicista trizona) illustration. A species endemic to the Carpathian Basin.

Some goose sketches from Thursday. I was lucky to find 2 Lesser White-fronted Geese amoung Greaters.

It was World Rewilding Day yesterday (globalrewilding.earth/world-rewildin… ), decided to spend it on an artifically managed part of the Kiskunság National Park (a fishpond and a flooded wetland). Black-tailed Godwit and Marsh Harrier sketches from a drained pond.

I'm sorry for the long waiting! I've drawn a winner from those who shared my post about the giclée prints. Check the video to find out who got lucky!
I would like to wish you all Happy New Year with my first painting of 2025: a Resplendent Quetzal (watercolor on paper). Never seen one, but it is a dream, especially because I would love to paint it in its rainforest habitat. I would like to thank you for following me last year!

I've painted 18 bird of prey plates back in 2001-2003, that period when I became full-time illustrator. I have not seen them since then, I could scan them only now. I look at them with very critical eyes, but thought to share them here.

There is still one week to win one of these giclée prints by retweeting this post! If you've already done it, your name is secured in the hat!

Two goose paintings (showing Greater and Lesser White-fronted and Red-breasted Geese) are available in limited edition giclée prints: 30 x 40 cm (with cca. 2 cm white margin), limited to 95 prints, 105 EUR. Send me a message if you are interested!

Yesterday came the news about the decision to declare Slender-billed Curlew extinct. It's my ultimate favourite bird, so it is quite tough to face this realization. You can read more about it here: vogelbescherming.nl/.../dbb230d1-5…... Here are some of my illusrtations and paintings.

Just completed this commission of a montage of Papuan skinks and their habitat. I've been privileged to take part on an expedition to Papua New Guinea 10 years ago. The lowest Papuascincus species was discovered during this expedition, and I had chance to make sketches of it.

Just finished these watercolour illustrations of 3 Branta geese (Brent and Barnacle 23 x 23 cm, Canada 27 x 30 cm). They are for sale for 90 EUR each. Send me a message if you are interested!

Black Stork family, watercolour on paper. I've seen this amazing nest in July in SW Hungary. It was on an old, huge Beech tree. The painting, the initial sketch, and the fieldsketch of the chicks.

I've painted 4 species (Greatspot, Syrian, Lesserspot and Greyheaded) for an atlas of the Woodpeckers of Hungary. They are 27x20 cm each, watercolour and gouache on paper. They are for sale for 100 EUR each, or for 350 EUR for the set.

I've spent a week in SW Hungary with Italian and German wildlife artists. We had a great time in an area extremely rich in biodiversity. Here's a watercolour montage of the more interesting invertebrates I saw. The Stag beetle bit my finger so hard, almost punctured my skin.

Next round of limited edition giclée prints: 'Alone', Slender-billed Curlew with Eurasian Curlews, oil on canvas. Available in 2 sizes: 50 x 70 cm (with cca. 2 cm white margin), limited to 45 prints, 155 EUR. 30 x 40 cm (with cca. 2 cm white margin), limited to 95 prints, 105 EUR
