Just Read: HOLLYWOOD ON TRIAL, a 1948 account of the HUAC hearings where 10 writers/directors/producers were held in contempt for keeping their political beliefs private as was their right. In 1950 they were each fined $1k and spent 6-12 months in jail. The Blacklist began.

July 23, 2002: Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith: Erik Tiemens’s concept for a rotorship. Later used to great effect as the Malevolence in The Clone Wars animated show. #StarWarsArchives19992005 youtu.be/Ocm__ZQTZVk

Here I am "Putting on the Ritz" at Stage 5 at Fox Studios, where Young Frankenstein was shot, as well as John Ford's The Grapes of Wrath, noirs Nightmare Alley and Niagara (with Marilyn Monroe), Fantastic Voyage (Raquel Welch), and the TV series Lost in Space. What a place!

July 22, 1997: Star Wars: The Phantom Menace: This Naboo air force concept art took Doug Chiang 1.5 days to complete. From: #StarWarsArchives19992005 youtu.be/Ocm__ZQTZVk

In the Sony Pictures Archive: A full-size baby Zilla head from Godzilla (1998). I'm amazed that this still exists, 27 years later.

July 21, 1976: Star Wars: Howard Chaykin drew this poster, based on Ralph McQuarrie’s designs, in time for the San Diego Comic Convention #OTD. #StarWarsArchives19771983 youtu.be/fgKQaRMBuVs

More cool stuff from the Sony Pictures Archive: This is a model concept for Doc Ock / Doctor Octopus, played by Alfred Molina in Spider-Man 2. The tentacles have a more organic look than in the movie.

Just read: Science is Fiction : The Films of Jean Painleve. A fascinating book about a French filmmaker who made poetic scientific films and hung out with the Surrealists. You can watch some of his films here: youtube.com/watch?v=DTpgDq…

July 2001: Star Wars: Attack of the Clones: Erik Tiemens’s exquisite concept for the picturesque Naboo lake retreat exterior. #StarWarsArchives19992005 youtu.be/Ocm__ZQTZVk

Spent the day researching at Fox Studios and finished early so had a lovely walk around. Found a Star Wars mural on the side of Stage 21, where Land of the Giants, Planet of the Apes, Predator 2 and many others were filmed.

In the Sony Pictures Archive: Props from MEN IN BLACK. I handled a few of the guns and they are surprisingly heavy and robustly constructed. Which is your weapon of choice?

July 18–20, 1978: Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back: Darth Vader prowls the bridge of the Executor. Painted by Ralph McQuarrie. #StarWarsArchives19771983 youtu.be/fgKQaRMBuVs

In the Sony Pictures Archive: Here are various proton packs from Ghostbusters, Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. Who are you gonna call?

July 16–18, 1978: Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back: Ralph McQuarrie painted “Cloud City” and explained that the spectacular vista is meant to represent an earlier, more enlightened age: “A place for people to marvel at things.” #StarWarsArchives19771983 youtu.be/fgKQaRMBuVs

In the Sony Pictures Archive: This is a set model of the Candyland study from Quentin Tarantino's DJANGO UNCHAINED. These models allow the filmmakers to visualise the space and experiment with camera positions.

In the Sony Archive: A large broken sword from HELLBOY (2004). Probably one of the few props not in the possession of @RealGDT

July 14, 2003: Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith: #OTD George Lucas shot the scene where Anakin finds out that Palpatine is the Sith Lord the Jedi have been seeking... and does not kill him. youtu.be/Ocm__ZQTZVk

Archive Woes 1: This is a clay model concept of THE GREEN GOBLIN for the first SPIDER-MAN movie. Sadly, over the years it has deteriorated, then fell over, fell apart, and parts smoothed out. Now it looks more like Zombie Green Goblin.

July 1974: The Star Wars: The first page of George Lucas's first draft script. The first scenes show that the value of education and the tragedy of a family in extreme peril were key themes from the very beginning. #StarWarsArchives19771983 youtu.be/fgKQaRMBuVs

Had a tour of Sony Pictures Culver City Studios last night. Almost had the place to myself. I'll post images from this and from the archives each day. All in a day's work!
