a big ol' comprehensive how-to guide for DECARBONIZING YOUR LIFE, from the heatmap team! heatmap.news/decarbonize-yo…
when determining whether AI will help save or destroy the planet, we often forget the 🐘 in the room: while there are myriad climate-positive applications of AI, fossil fuel giants are already using this tech to increase oil and gas production today heatmap.news/energy/microso…
are all these climate tech startups just data center startups now? lately, cleantech companies of all stripes are finding lucrative early deployment opportunties for building and powering AI data centers in a cleaner, more energy efficient manner heatmap.news/climate-tech/d…
NEW: @AvalancheFusion, a startup building tabletop-sized fusion reactors, just landed a $10 million grant from Washington state, one of the largest government-led fusion investments to date heatmap.news/climate-tech/a…
TOMORROW: Don't miss our virtual briefing featuring Heatmap's @katie_brigham, @latimes' @Sammy_Roth, @business' @HiMichelleMa, and @Fisch_Tank's @EricFischgrund on the challenges of climate reporting in a rapidly changing political and economic landscape.
The One Big Beautiful Bill Act has transformed US clean energy policy, gutting EV & solar/wind incentives. But it’s weirder than a straight repeal of the Inflation Reduction Act. Today at @heatmap_news, we have a new summary of the past 20 years of tax credits — in one table
Mark your calendars for a virtual Heatmap briefing next Tuesday. Heatmap's own @katie_brigham will be joined by @latimes' @Sammy_Roth, @business' @HiMichelleMa, and @Fisch_Tank's @EricFischgrund to talk about covering climate and energy in these strange times.
Emerald AI says they can turn data centers into grid assets by reducing their electricity use 0.5% of the time, freeing up almost 100 gigawatts of grid capacity. how big a difference will that make in the nation's need for an enormous grid infra buildout? heatmap.news/climate-tech/e…
Thank you @katie_brigham! We're thrilled at @EmeraldAI_ to unlock massive new capacity for data centers on existing power systems. This is a great profile of both the challenges and the opportunity to advance AI competitiveness, stabilize rates, and protect grid reliability 💪
"If an algorithm could help alleviate even some of the urgency of an unprecedented buildout of power plants and transmission infrastructure, well, that’d be a big deal." Meet @EmeraldAi_, the startup that promises to save the grid with software: heatmap.news/climate-tech/e…
Really glad to see this in-depth coverage of what the GOP has just done to the Loan Programs Office. Gutting Section 1703 while toying with 1706 will destroy what makes the LPO so effective and so important. Thanks so much to @katie_brigham for interviewing me for this piece!
“This is the longest-standing program of the LPO. So to see this defunded is like, you’re decapitating the LPO’s crown jewel," @advaitarun_ tells @katie_brigham. Here's what the One Big Beautiful Bill did to the Loan Programs Office: heatmap.news/climate-tech/o…
the Big Beautiful Bill has left the Loan Program's Office a shadow of its former self, hollowing out many of its core programs and greatly reducing its ability to place big bets heatmap.news/climate-tech/o…
Of course, I'm not opposed to CCS or CDR. I'm not opposed to building transmission lines. I'm not opposed to building housing. I just have a very narrow and unworkable set of criteria that need to be satisfied for me to support it. Of course, we need it all though.
sodium-ion battery startup Lyten has scooped up Northvolt's old li-ion energy storage systems plant in Poland. it's the largest energy storage facility in Europe, thus making Lyten a major player in this sector practically overnight heatmap.news/climate-tech/l…
how much scientific rigor/certainty does it take for a CDR company to be “ready” for the voluntary carbon market? i explore this q through the lens of Planetary, a startup using the ocean to drawdown CO2. w/ insights from @carbonplanorg + @_CWorthy heatmap.news/carbon-removal…
Really excellent new piece from @katie_brigham on the first certification and issuance of Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement carbon removal credits heatmap.news/carbon-removal…
the Senate mega-bill and its proposed overhaul of clean energy tax credits is causing a flurry of feelings amongst climate tech investors, whose reactions thus far have ranged from broadly enthusiastic to tepidly optimistic to deeply dismayed heatmap.news/climate-tech/c…
This is a great catch by @katie_brigham: Right now, the One Big, Beautiful Bill would cut off all tax credits for nuclear fusion — even though it’s likely to extend them for advanced nuclear fission and geothermal.
nuclear got a reprieve in the latest version of the budget bill, but the carveout that extends tax credit eligibility for new nuclear does NOT include fusion, which may now ~truly~ be on the verge of commercialization heatmap.news/climate-tech/o…
America's ability to commercialize its fusion energy breakthroughs is seriously jeopardized by the current state of Republicans' IRA rollbacks. Great reporting by @katie_brigham
microreactor company @RadiantNuclear looks well positioned to be the nuclear company of the Trump admin's dreams, as it seeks to commercialize 1 mw microreactors for military bases and other remote outposts by 2028 heatmap.news/climate-tech/r…
