"rigorous and surprisingly entertaining" is going on my tombstone
A rigorous and surprisingly entertaining new book about the role of workplace surveillance in trucking offers an ethnographic portrait of a profession in transition. nyer.cm/QHb7GbL
So happy to have this article out in the world! It was a dream to collaborate on this with @Sarah_Brayne and @sarahlageson, and grateful to @ashleytrubin and the rest of the LSR team for helping us refine it ✨
Surveillance Deputies is out and open access! In this paper @law_soc, I partnered with my favorite surveillance scholars, @sarahlageson and @karen_ec_levy, to analyze when ordinary people surveil on behalf of the state: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/la…

It was fun as heck to think with @moradipegah about weird celebrity controversies and robotic replication — come for the JFK robot, stay for Bob Dylan’s fake (?) autographs! 🖋️🤖
Ever wondered what Donald Rumsfeld, Gordon Ramsay, and Bob Dylan have to do with generative AI? Great news: My essay with @karen_ec_levy on what a quirky old machine can tell us about how automation reconfigures social relationships is out in @IJoC_USC! ijoc.org/index.php/ijoc…
Sooooo many people have been asking this. So, through 3 controversies surrounding the use of the autopen, we show how robotic replication can shake up our assumptions about what values are embedded in everyday artifacts -- like autographs, letters, and contracts

My research deals with hallucinations, so I was excited to try this out - unfortunately it immediately fell for a classic gender stereotype (CC @CadeMetz)
ChatGPT technology makes things up, or "hallucinates" about 3% of the time when summarizing facts, according to research from Vectra, a new start-up founded by former Google employees. They also found that a Google system’s rate was 27%. nyti.ms/463F0gW
A fantastic example from my student @emmharv of how hallucination-checking software can fall prey to the same biases as LLMs hallucinating in the first place. A service highlighted by the @nytimes (@vectara) assumes a sentence with female doc & male nurse is likely hallucinated.
