I wrote about @NPR 's decision to frame disabled people's ongoing exclusion from all public spaces as an annoyance to be navigated by individuals, rather than a massive civil rights violation to be challenged by the collective. thegauntlet.news/p/disabled-peo…
A wonderful, encouraging read for all of us who are #COVID_19 aware The Pandemic Has Been a Portal (for a few of us), by @julia_doubleday thegauntlet.news/p/the-pandemic…
A beautiful, thoughtful piece from @julia_doubleday. This is important for everyone to read, whether they've already stepped through the portal or are still clinging to the facade of a world that no longer exists. This one really resonated with me.
In 2020, Arundhati Roy wrote a gorgeous, prescient essay called “The Pandemic is a Portal”. In this piece, I discuss who actually walked through it: the COVID conscious community, and why I’m proud to be a part of it. thegauntlet.news/p/the-pandemic…
Another beautifully written piece by Julia. For all of us who have walked through the Portal together🔥✊❤️😷

a big problem is that a lot of people on both sides spend most of their time with people who can work Whether that be coworkers or others who can go out and do things that employable people can do Your praxis has ravines in it bc your social life is capitalistically designed.
bestie & i are freaking tired! but we persist! because we value our health & our community
I’m very tired, yet I persist.
Your States medicaid thats been continually defunded? The states medicaid that regularly makes people jump through hoops of useless appointment after appointment in order to get the care they actually need covered? That medicaid?
If DoorDash is actually essential for you as a disabled person, perhaps you should petition your state’s Medicaid for a caregiver or some life skill classes. There’s alternatives to this rhetoric they won’t even consider because they often don’t care about meaningful solutions.
Beautiful piece. Thank you for it.

we do this shit every month man. its 100% possible to say “meal delivery services have been fantastic for disabled people with thin/no support systems” AND “the meal delivery model as it stands is bad for the workers participating in it”. this is ridiculous
oh no I am now getting genuine “DoorDash is essential for disabled people” replies on bsky
Great, resonant essay by @julia_doubleday -- very grounding for CC ppl/those of who have remained true to our values.

I have been wondering about this. People who understand that the system cannot meet the needs of able bodied people appear to think it is meeting the needs of disabled people already. It makes more sense if Jenny is right.
I don't think they actually believe it, rather it's a load-bearing belief for them. They *have* to believe it to justify their eugenicism and abandonment
Hear hear! Another great article from Julia. Solidarity with the Covid conscious community (which SHOULD be all of us)

“As most people allowed themselves to be swept, gently and surely, back into the waiting arms of self-centered individualism for the sake of consumerism and capitalism, a few brave people firmly refused to be gaslit by the state..” thegauntlet.news/p/the-pandemic…

“Imagine that you know what getting worse looks like- and it’s your friends who can’t get out of bed anymore at all. And as you suffer through all of this, people continue to call the virus that did this to you a “cold”, (…) act like it’s their God-given right to spread it.” 👏🏼

Julia Doubleday writes about "the political and social normalization of social murder over the past five years" and points to Arundhati Roy's "nothing could be worse than a return to normality" where people are "refusing to acknowledge the rupture."
