Father's day this year holds many memories of my Dad. Dad died 10 years ago tomorrow. As opposed to feeling melancholy I thought I would do a little thread about him. So here goes.

I was there with some students last week. A relative fought there and survived - he wrote about it to his father. He was killed about a year later at Bullecourt.
For anyone visiting Amiens (even if only for one night) the incredible son et lumiere is played out every night from mid-July through to September. My little group watched it the other night - utterly spell-binding

Kicking off our July #HuttedHistories, the fantastic Stephen Barker joins us with his talk ‘Watershed – Mahatma Gandhi and the First World War’
Well, this was a nice surprise to start the day, thank you @Tripadvisor - As Jacques and I have always said "we're only as good as our last tour," something we firmly believe in even after all these years.
When you are at the very top of your game. Never any doubt of this success story. Having been guiding for years Gen and Jacques know the ground like the back of their hands. A wholehearted congrats from me and @BattlefieldDisc

Next to the theater & memorial you’ll find the Joe Mann Pavilion; a place where people can drink & eat. A nice place to stop for lunch or after a tour, enjoying the memorabilia & contemplating the life & heroism of this young man from Reardan, WA, USA & what it means to us. /end
The woods near Best house the Joe Mann Open Air Theater featuring a beautiful memorial to Joe. It depicts a mother pelican feeding her children with her own blood. It’s a popular myth but a powerful symbol of extreme self sacrifice nonetheless, just like Joe’s own sacrifice. 2/
A thread 🧶… Pfc Joe E. Mann. 22 y/o and one of only two #medalofhonor recipients in #101stairborne division during #WW2. Many people visit the memorial to Joe near the site where he sacrificed his life to safe his mates every year. Fewer people know and visit the other…
Homeward bound after a fantastic tour with @MatMcLachlan Explorer tours. We finished today in and around Hangard Wood. Holidays in Scotland beckon with @edwinpopken and really looking forward to the Old Buckenham Air show on Saturday

Moody skies at Thiepval this afternoon - we have been dodging rainy showers all day

Explaining the innovations used at Messines to 8 Australians and one New Zealander this morning. The ground speaks for itself.

This morning’s walk took me on a mission. To visit grave of Lt Hon Albert Edward George Arnold Keppel. Commemorated in Quidenham Church KIA gallantly leading his men at tender age of 19 on 31 July 1917. The helmet he was wearing at the time sits above the memorial in the UK

A smashing day walking the Oosterbeek perimeter with five guests from Berkshire, UK, discussing the dramatic events taking place there in Sept 1944 and the experiences of British airborne troops and Dutch civilians in what became known as the ‘Witches’ Cauldron’.
Fromelles- it’s a battlefield that is always empty. Not particularly recognised by Brits, but for Aus the blackest day. In the short space of 24 hrs 5,533 Australians would be killed wounded or missing on literally ground that is as flat as a billiard table. 109 yrs ago today

The site where elements of 1st Airborne Recce Squadron were ambushed by Germans on 17 Sept 1944. Several were killed, others were taken prisoner. Due to a mistake in identity Arthur Barlow was initially reported as one of those killed and his wife subsequently received this…
