GOP lawmakers are starting to publicly protest Education funding cuts. @RepDonBacon wrote a letter bacon.house.gov/uploadedfiles/… to OMB and issued a press release.
In my story, I reported that an Ed Dept official said that federal data is safe and will soon be transferred to IES’s secure servers. Just learned from a former senior ED official that "IES doesn't have secure servers. That was part of the problem." hechingerreport.org/proof-points-p…
“Thanks to @jillbarshay for an exceptional account of the assault on NCES and to Peggy Carr for another measure of her profile of courage” – AERA Exec. Dir. Felice Levine hechingerreport.org/proof-points-p…
UPDATE: Ed Dept just announced this afternoon that it is giving acting IES director Matthew Soldner a second title: acting commissioner of NCES. The lack of a stats commissioner had been the obstacle to releasing the NAEP science scores.
Starting to see consequences from the mass cancellations and firings at ED. A month ago, I reported about a missed June 1 deadline for a statistical report. Now NAEP science scores are delayed. hechingerreport.org/proof-points-d…

Brain scans revealed the damage: neural connections collapsed from 79 to just 42. That's a 47% reduction in brain connectivity. If your computer lost half its processing power, you'd call it broken. That's what's happening to ChatGPT users' brains.
83.3% of ChatGPT users couldn't quote from essays they wrote minutes earlier. Let that sink in. You write something, hit save, and your brain has already forgotten it because ChatGPT did the thinking.
BREAKING: MIT just completed the first brain scan study of ChatGPT users & the results are terrifying. Turns out, AI isn't making us more productive. It's making us cognitively bankrupt. Here's what 4 months of data revealed: (hint: we've been measuring productivity all wrong)
It was an honor to speak at the National Press Foundation earlier this week. But now see that 1) I need one of those warm-toned ring lights and 2) I need to tidy up my home office!
School may be ending, but the time for education reporters to dig in to the Department of Education changes is *now.* Recap of our expert panel w/ @jillbarshay @hechingerreport @Noellerson @aasahq @radiokeri @nationalparents & Stephen Provasnik ex @EdNCES nationalpress.org/topic/how-to-c…
Department of irony. During moments of writing procrastination, I look at my metrics. The main source of traffic to my story about how students are using AI in a way that harms their learning is ChatGPT.

.@EDSecMcMahon is using her political capital to get former TN Ed commissioner Penny Schwinn confirmed as her #2 at @usedgov if she can convince GOP in TN, that may help…
Tennessee State Rep. @CepickyTn64 joins @michaelpleahy to discuss his upcoming meeting with U.S. Secretary of Education @EDSecMcMahon, and nominee for U.S. Deputy Secretary of Education Penny Schwinn.
