Stepping back as a partner at @LightspeedVP
I've been a mentor at @NVCA VC University for many years. This interview encapsulates what I tell the early career and aspiring VCs over the course of our 1:1 meetings. It covers how to break into venture, what is innate and what can be learned, how to win deals early in your…
Since stepping back from venture capital my greatest delights have come from picking up new hobbies at which I am objectively, embarrassingly terrible. In my contemporary dance classes I can’t remember the choreo and am extremely ungainly. At tai chi push hands, frail old people…
Our lives are limited to an unbelievable degree by our unwillingness to be temporarily low in social status. Embarrassment has been the cost of acquiring every valuable skill I have. If you design your life not to feel it, you're selling yourself short. (More below.)
For generations, people in San Francisco have built the future. They've created businesses, families, and diverse and vibrant neighborhoods. But that promise—to build a life and belong to your community—is slipping away for too many. Too many parents are asking whether they can…
i guess what im trying to say is that there is a way that you can enforce immigration laws without being a total fucking asshole about it.
Wintermute is one of the most successful companies in the bitcoin and crypto industry. Now @EvgenyGaevoy is coming to the United States as they expand their ambition to take on the largest market-makers on Wall Street. Everyone is talking about legacy finance firms coming to…
Still the same mission 13+ years later: build honest financial products that improve lives. No gimmicks. No gotchas. Just smarter underwriting and a payment network aligned with consumer & merchant needs. Thanks @bbcworldservice for the conversation: bit.ly/3TBzGNY

People on Reddit get it. Things are shifting. I’m proud to tell people I’m raising my kids in San Francisco. ❤️🌉
"Data from @ADP, the payroll processing firm, shows that in computer-related fields, employment for workers with less than two years of tenure peaked in 2023 and is down 20-25% since then. There is a similar pattern among customer service representatives, who are increasingly…
For the first time ever, the most famous American in the world is not the president or a Hollywood icon or tech billionaire — it’s the Pope. This is more than a Catholic triumph; it’s a cultural watershed for the United States. substack-proxy.glitch.me/articles/lette…
Excellent article by @germanrlopez for the @nytimes about a big, important problem in the US: Most crimes aren’t solved. If you murder someone, it’s essentially a coin flip whether you’ll be arrested for it. If you steal a car, you’ll almost certainly get away with it.…
Just finished reading this book. It’s the best book on the nature of mind and intelligence I’ve ever read, can’t recommend it more highly. My favorite highlight covers the way in which imagination and attention are the same thing.
1/ My book "A Brief History of Intelligence" is now available! I tell the 600 million year story of how human intelligence evolved and its relationship to progress in AI. More details in thread below👇 a.co/d/fBLWgZH
The Holy Grail of housing reforms was just passed in California. The age of Yes has dawned. More affordable homes are coming to a city near you. Thank you @CAgovernor, @BuffyWicks, and @Scott_Wiener! growsf.org/news/2025-07-0…
Every single one of the 11 Meta superintelligence hires is an immigrant who did their undergrad abroad. 7 China, 1 India, 1 Australia, 1 UK, 1 South Africa. 8 are PhD or PhD dropouts in the US. Immigration is key to US AI innovation.
tpot talks about asian women as if we arent people - it’s misogynistic, racist, and disgusting. do better.
Around 1978 during a citywide downzoning process, the planning code was amended to limit the number of roommates that could live together. Since then, builders and developers have been afraid to build the shared housing and co-op housing we need to support our renters.
Due to laws written in the 1970s, it's illegal for more than 5 people if they're not related by blood to live together in San Francisco. Yes, you read that right. To fix this, I am introducing the Shared Housing Reform Act this week.
Thank you Supervisor @bilalmahmood for repealing an outdated rule making it illegal for more than five unrelated people to share a home. Yep, our planning code defines what a family is and makes many living arrangements illegal unless you're blood related growsf.org/news/2025-06-3…
Fun to sit down with my mom and @jolingkent to talk about where @Uber is going and where our family came from. I think you can tell who is the boss in our family (hint: not me!)
Dara Khosrowshahi is the son of an immigrant family who fled Tehran and the Iranian revolution. He's also the chief executive officer of Uber, who has worked to change the culture of the company he took over in 2017. Khosrowshahi talks with @jolingkent about the road to…
.@jenniferdoleac has really opened my eyes to what works and what doesn't in reducing crime - i'm looking forward to this book!
Y’all, I wrote a book! The Science of Second Chances is based on my decades of work studying crime and criminal behavior, first as an economics professor and now as a policy expert at Arnold Ventures. It shares what we know from cutting-edge research about how to intervene at…
The beauty of mathematics is that it helps draw connections between seemingly disparate things - like how to price an option on a stock and the famous light double slit experiment!
The other day I noticed something very cool: the most important equation describing particles in physics is basically the same as the most important equation describing risk in finance - with one crucial difference. Behold: the Schrödinger equation in quantum mechanics, and the…
