Studying cells inside embryos since before it was cool.
Thrilled to have this piece on the wonder, mystery, and very long history of #devbiol out in @aeonmag. aeon.co/essays/after-3…
Developing a grad class called "Scientists as Writers." Want to merge a craft workshop with a scicomm class while writing for different audiences. PLEASE reply w 1) science writing resources you like & 2) things you wish were taught but are not. THANKS!
It's MicroscopyMonday, so let's take a peek into the 🔬 This movie was taken by Shinya Inuoe, who built the polarizing microscope that allowed scientists to see mitotic spindle fibers live for the first time. Dr. Inuoe premiered his research at MBL.
So stoked to have a small part in this capital-A awesome paper with @Yonsei_TGIL, @JinyHa_, and @jogleeson_ucsd and others. Chanjae Lee (not on social media) did ALL the heavy lifting for the in vivo validations. in my lab . Great work was ONLY possible thanks to the @NIH.
Check out our new paper in @nature nature.com/articles/s4158…. We report genetic mechanisms of neural tube defects in patients. Spina bifida is also known as meningomyelocele (MM). Prior family-based and association studies found few linked genes, so we took a different approach.
Is you support animal research, watch the video and comment!
fda.gov/news-events/fd… Please watch video and post a comment in support of use of animal models. They are seeking our input and if we don’t provide it then they will simply say well we didn’t hear anything
Director of the Nat'l Institute of Child Health & Human Development (NICHD) was summarily dismissed yesterday. Here's your reminder that birth defects kill twice as many American kids as cancer but there is no St. Jude's for birth defects. Only the NICHD. nature.com/articles/d4158…
It. Is. On!!! Stand up for Science, Austin! 4pm. South steps of the Texas Capitol. Be there!

Stoked to be speaking this Friday at Stand up for Science in Austin, Texas! Come support science at 4pm on the South steps of the Capitol!

Yesterday I spoke with sales reps whose jobs are on the line with current NIH cuts. Today, I talked to venture capitalist in biotech. That entire industry runs on workers trained in NIH-funded labs. But the "money people" don't know much about how NIH works. Educate them!
People need to know that NIH grants are the backbone of American biology and thus of our biotech industry. I took a moment away from doing science to talk about how science gets done with @ojaldridge with @KUTNews about recent IDC rate cuts. kut.org/science/2025-0…
