If your policy idea sounds nice in the abstract but doesn't take into account implementation challenges, second-order effects, or the possibility of unintended consequences, then it's actually a bad idea. Even more so if it violates individual rights.
A doctor that can't or won't help you take cost into consideration (or can't/won't delegate that to a knowledgeable billing specialist, financial counselor, etc.) is a lousy doctor.

One of the best ways to level up your game in health policy is to learn about inferential methods. Even if you don't plan to do research yourself, it is hugely helpful to learn how to critically read and understand the methods behind the research that gets published.
Health savings accounts (HSAs) are a powerful idea; I'm not against them. But current rules limit the good they can do. We should either free them up or develop alternative approaches to empowering people to be price-conscious consumers of care.
