Such a good comment. Sadly, in South Africa poor education outcomes and chasing away foreign investors with short sighted laws (eg. on property matters), compounded by unreliable electricity and rail transport and a dysfunctional police service, just gives manufacturing no chance
The notion that developing countries can bypass manufacturing — and leap straight to services instead — ignores how every major economy actually developed.
We don't even have an ambassador in Washington trying to stop the looming tariff crisis...sure to lead to thousands of job losses. There's just silence. Or blocking of questions from @ClaysonMonyela who still cannot say who is speaking to the US government on behalf of SA workers
The bright young DIRCO minister, Ronald Lamola, is a huge disappointment. At a time SAfrica can afford it least, our ambassadors, where we have those, are mostly self-serving freeloaders; our embassy buildings are crumbling and there is absolutely no sense of urgency or direction
Yes. Indeed. We build mall upon mall upon mall, little manageable eco chambers with better security and services (electricity and water) amidst the dysfunction outside. Bankrupting people who overspend on stuff they don't need.
South Africa basically. Closing down factories and opening up malls.
It seems @ClaysonMonyela has blocked me. Quite strange. I'm just asking who is our ambassador in Washington and who is speaking on SA's behalf in Washington with the US authorities to prevent the pending tariff crisis that could lead to 100 000 job losses. Please ask him for me?
Hi @RediTlhabi any idea who the SA ambassador is in Washington? I've asked @ClaysonMonyela but he hasn't responded yet. Serious question. One assumes there is someone there trying to prevent the jobs blood bath we're about to see?
To emphasise a point I made on my podcast. The biggest challenge facing @GovernmentZA is not a bill that passed at the US Foreign Affairs Committee level and must STILL come before a full House. The biggest challenge is SA's sluggish engagement with aspects of the US political,…
Please correct me if I am wrong @ClaysonMonyela South Africa currently has NO ambassador in Washington? Who on earth is talking to the US about not destroying 100 000 jobs in SA from 1 August?
Not a terrible water feature. Put a bow around it and open it officially.
I think this was yesterday. But @JHBWater, enough now! You need to replace the entire suburb of Parkwood’s pipes. This has now been happening on and off since Covid. 5 years! You cannot keep doing hasty bodge fixes. What is your plan?? @CityofJoburgZA @DadaMorero
Bears repeating: #FLYSAA received more than R50 billion in bailouts from the taxpayer in the past ten years and still made a loss in the last financial year exceeding R350 million. dailyinvestor.com/south-africa/1…
No. Madness is a state owned airline funded by taxpayers - #SAA - that gets more than R50 Billion in bailouts over ten years and STILL makes a R350m loss in the latest financial year. That is madness.
FlySafair was founded in 2013 and they now control 60% of all domestic flights? That's madness.
It's worth highlighting how few parties in SA have real, democratic leadership conferences. Broadly speaking, it's only the ANC (albeit using various questionable ways to get to a final desired outcome), the DA and the FF who even bother. Others? Dictatorial fiefdoms.
ASA internal democracy monitor: Day 1788 of Mashaba leading without being democratically elected at a party conference. Day 143 of ASA being in violation of its interim constitution by failing to call said conference “within 9 months after the 2024 national government elections”.
Sort of like their etoll gates. When are they removing those and reimbursing all the people who diligently paid all these years?

R1 trillion moved between 100 connected people since 1994. How's that for tackling disparity and inequality? How about letting the country know how many billions you are worth mr President and how you worked to become so wealthy? dailyinvestor.com/south-africa/8…

If I had to guess where the greatest public sector corruption in SA is happening in terms of money value and lack of value in return, I would list these three as my top ones: the PIC, the RAF and the lottery.
The Public Investment Corporation (PIC) has sent another R150 million to struggling poultry group Daybreak Foods to support its business rescue proceedings and pay salaries. brnw.ch/21wUcSP
Glad to see Harry Potter has given up the quidditch and is now playing a real game. Gotta watch out for those beaters.
The Wallabies barely scraped past Fiji and now take on the best-of-the-best from f̶o̶u̶r̶ three different countries. This is going to a slaughter. On that note, the last time these sides played, the Lions featured TEN Welshmen in the XV and another one on the bench. The total…
There is no doubt that the ANC must be booted out of office in Jhb and everywhere else. Prince asks: "How can you go without water in Sandton? The richest square mile in Africa?" Also: "The way the ANC has destroyed the Eastern Cape is unforgiveable." AMEN.

How are the pools looking in the Central Karoo?
R1.9 million combicourt built in RECORD time! This is the only Combicourt within 20 Kilometres and the FIRST of its kind within the PE Northern Areas. But like I say, it’s deeper than that! Thank you Minister @GaytonMcK.
Thanks Emma and team. Also grateful that someone is doing something about this. Where oh where is the justice department?
