I think there is one important inconsistency that should exist in a standalone or book series. Interpretation of beliefs and laws. Characters need room to fully understand or misinterpret them both. The reader might question the inconsistency, but it's necessary.
People will always think they found something in a book the author intended. The problem with this is whether the reader is searching for something negative or not. The greater issue is interpretation, which can be extremely subjective.
