Congratulations Prof. Potluri! I am so excited for your future students— they are going to learn so much from you, you are such a great mentor. You are going to do amazing things at @umsi!
I am thrilled to be joining @umsi as an Assistant Professor! grateful for support from my many mentors, family and friends to reach this milestone.
I disagree with the notion that “everyone is replaceable”. If there’s one thing I’ve learned going to conferences, some of the most intriguing projects I’ve encountered have personal backstories/cultural significance behind them. The human in HCI is what brings that extra spark.
Ok, the Seattle folks weren’t wrong about summer being quite majestic!

“You could see some stereotypes emerge.” While tools like #ChatGPT reduce the time it takes to review job applicants, @UW #UWAllen researchers discovered they also are biased against those with a disability. But #AI can be trained to be less ableist. #a11y washington.edu/news/2024/06/2…
Medicine does this infuriating thing with women's health where we all notice a repeating pattern of debilitating symptoms and then call it a "syndrome" and thats where the acknowledgement stops. It's never a "real" disease with an identifiable cause and a treatment. Examples...

I have had such a wonderful experience at #FAccT24! It is truly an interdisciplinary conference and I am glad to have had an opportunity to learn from not just technologists but legal experts/policy makers. And lovely to meet some #a11y enthusiasts in AI thanks to @DisabledInCS!

📢📢In-person #DisabledInComputing meetup - happening today at 11:10a at #FAccT2024!!! All are welcome. 📢📢 @FAccTConference @DisabledSTEM @StemDisabled

In summary: using GPT in real world tasks such as hiring requires caution and could introduce bias against #disabled folks. Without added data, prompts improved bias for some (but not all) conditions. Contact @hcikate or see the full paper using the QR code below! #FAccT2024
This bias also bled into GPT’s written justifications. Then, the authors trained a disability-aware GPT, using a prompt encouraging GPT to consider the underrepresentation of disabled people and avoid making assumptions. This reduced #ableism, but not for all disabilities.
To answer this question, @hcikate and colleagues created two resume copies: with or without the addition of disability scholarships/awards. GPT was asked to rank them. Sadly (yet somehow unsurprisingly) the resumes disclosing #disability were ranked lower. 2/
This is such an important work!
