new from me, @ellenbthom + @hannah_beckler: it’s almost a cliche to point out data centers use a lot of power. but how are companies trying to meet that demand, and are there environmental costs communities may have to bear either way? unfortunately, the answer seems to be yes!
for the past year my (former) colleagues @BusinessInsider and i looked into the true costs of data center buildout across the country. bit by painstaking bit, we pieced together a database of permitted data centers & docs of water use + tax incentives. the series is rolling out🧵
literally i would sit there at my computer doing this for hundreds of permits to figure out who “Nova Mango Farms LLC” or “Magellan Enterprises LLC” belonged to (iirc both are Google)
we spent months logging permits, tracking down LLC ownership, and politely asking public records officers to release info, so tbh lol i would be incredibly sad if you don’t read at least one of these stories businessinsider.com/how-calculate-…
