I have seen this same cycle in (adult) personal development/self-improvement spaces as well. Non-"self-coercion"/anti-"willpower" dominated the discourse for a minute there. But the whiplash is well underway now.
Every few years we rediscover that learning is hard work and effortful in the short term. Then we spend the next few years trying to make it fun and effortless again.

I spoke with a German family last year who were furtively homeschooling. They wanted to take a few classes with @socraticexp but wanted to make sure we’d keep everything discreet so they wouldn’t be caught. It was a black market transaction using cryptocurrency.
at stanford one day there was a crank outside the quantum mechanics classroom handing out flyers for his theory of everything. instead of ignoring him, the teacher grabbed a stack of flyers and we spent the whole class that day proving precisely why the theory was wrong
You only really understand some concept if you notice when a frontier reasoning model tries to bullshit you on the topic Maybe this is how exams should be structured from now on
