My experience: breeders want to release varieties that benefit farmers - it's what motivates us. Germplasm work can be very interesting but it's at least a step removed from benefiting farmers. For me, field-ready cultivar development - every breeder I know is of the same opinion

That's not to dismiss germplasm development as unimportant BUT every cultivar breeder I know also does a lot of germplasm development to benefit their programs. It's not either/or - it's part of the job. Knowledge & trust to use one's own germplasm is also higher.
