So, so deeply proud. Writing about environment and colonialism through the lens of beekeeping in the Yucatan, Cuba, and Florida, Angélica Marquez-Osuna will be a new Assist. Professor at Loyola-Chicago but will first complete a postdoc at the Weatherhead Center next year. Brava!

'Exit Wounds' offers a rare look at gun trafficking and the human stories behind it—smugglers, assassins, agents, and journalists. #FirearmsTrafficking

Exhibit opening this weekend: Measuring Difference!

A symposium then a standing ovation by colleagues and former students for Prof. Dain Borges this past Friday at the U. of Chicago. A life lesson in how to retire as an academic. Fortunate to have had (and continue to have) Dain as a mentor.

From the 🔥 cover and Introduction excited to have an Isis Focus essay on Labor and Histories of Science with @bharunkucuk and @laura_stark @hssonline

In case anyone is in the Pasadena/Los Angeles area this evening. Tonight at the Huntington. Free, just need to register.
Join our friends @TheHuntington for this important talk. Prof @gabrielasotolav will be discussing her research on how Mexico became a leading producer of wheat germplasm and how it was instrumental in finding a solution to end global hunger in the mid-twentieth century.
job in famously good Latin American history department
JOB in LA History at Stony Brook University. Assist Prof, open time period/region (except Mexico, sorry!), focus on indigenous and/or Afro-Latin America. Great program & colleagues! Feel free to DM me with questions, etc. Please repost! apply.interfolio.com/130366
Need to fly to Chile to see this exhibit on Project Cybersyn put on by @edenmedina. Here with the original designers of the command center. ¡Bravo amiga!

Surprising Pasadena fauna during early a.m. walk. Reminds me of a wonderful 2003 documentary, "The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill," which explores displacement and human/non-human animal interactions in urban spaces. I hope this little guy finds a flock, or at least, a buddy.

Simply ecstatic to be the Dibner Distinguished Fellow @TheHuntington for 2023-24. So grateful for the time to think, write, finish overdue manuscripts, as well as, California winters, family, and friends. Basically, I'm charging all my needed batteries.

First day of sabbatical. This view from my apartment across the street from Cal Tech fully captures my mood. I'll take it as an auspicious sign.

It will take time to understand the full impact of today's Supreme Court decision against race-conscious admissions because we know that admission to college can transform an entire family, not just the student. A tough day for inclusion and higher ed. youtube.com/watch?v=AoGjh3…
