Economist, focusing on local & devolved public finance + tax in low- and middle-income countries @theifs. Occasional forays into other topical issues.
Working in an organisation where collaboration, ideation and mentoring and a common mission are important this strikes me as a problem. There should be a push to 2+ or 3+ days a week in the office by the Welsh govt: bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…
More and better technology and facilities are needed for the NHS. But NHS clinical staff is up over 20% over last 6 years, whilst activity (treatments, tests) up more like 10%. It's not clear that staff numbers are first priority for more funding. bbc.com/news/articles/…
🎉Congrats to my @theIFS #TaxDev colleague @am_iddrisu on his new paper on the links between corruption perceptions, tax morale and natural resources: 💡Natural resources rents mean less link between corruption & tax morale by weakening tax-spend link. taxdev.org/relationship-b…

This poorly thought out ‘ban’ on public speaking and engaging in discussions by civil servants is frankly unworkable. In local govt, civil servants are constantly engaging with councils in semi public fora - a vital two way flow of info that ministers can’t hope to replicate.
Frankly outrageous from the govt. This new, and I think unprecedented, ban on civil servants speaking in public will damage public debate, politics, policy making and the civil service itself. What are they thinking? instituteforgovernment.org.uk/comment/govern…
