Svitlana was a patient of ours at Unbroken after Rus shelled her Bakhmut home and she lost her leg. She stayed to care for her mum. And she didn't want to leave her garden and her favourite roses. She's determined she will return, to plant flowers again, in a liberated Bakhmut.
Before the Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Bakhmut was known as the “city of roses”. The ruins of Bakhmut don't qualify as a city anymore. Its residents are gone, either dead or living elsewhere. The roses are still blooming but there is no one to appreciate them……

What is absolutely clear, from working with more and more Ukrainians who have survived Russian captivity, is that torture inflicted upon them is systemic, co-ordinated and evidence based. It is not random, ad-hoc or inflicted by 'rogue' agents of the state - but by the state.
