Elucidating the role of microglia in acute brain injuries, neurovascular function and sex differences in development, maturity and disease @BIG_Center_UVA
7 years ago, at my PhD Graduation, my Advisor gave me this picture of my last days in grad school grading papers, father-ing and finishing up my Thesis. His point was that Grad school had successfully built into me some level of multi-tasking that would be vital for success 🤓😎

In 2018, in a study led by Akiyoshi et al., real-time in vivo imaging revealed that microglial process contact of neuronal spines increased spine Ca2+ dynamics and this activity was impaired upon microglial activation with LPS: eneuro.org/content/5/5/EN….🤩 #20YearsInVivoMGImaging

A cool thing about doing fun research is that you start wanting to be and dress like your cool student 🤩.

This guy is on fire. Postdoc fellowship…Check. Career development award…Check. co-author publication in May...Check. co-author publication June...Check. First author publication in Nature Communications in July…Check. Check it out. Great stuff, Tré💪🏾👏🏾
Finally online today: nature.com/articles/s4146… Thanks to all involved, especially @eyolab and the phenomenal undergraduates I've had the privilege to mentor. Also check out two of my other recent publications. 1) pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/pmid/… 2) onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.11…
I’m usually a fan of term limits but yesterday I abandoned my fandom with the declaration "Ukpong Eyo promoted from Associate Professor without tenure to tenured Associate Professor without term". Too many mentors, mentees, friends, family, companion and God to thank 🙏🏾.Let’s Go!
To wrap up this series, this year (2025) in a soon-to-be-published study, @astrecyte is revealing that microglia (rather than BAMs) maintain basal capillary tone through vasodilatory COX1 signaling. A pre-print is available here: researchsquare.com/article/rs-614….🤩#20YearsInVivoMGImaging

In 2024, in a study led @KoichiHaruwaka from the @LongJun_Wu lab, in vivo imaging was used to show that microglia facilitate neuronal activity following emergence from anesthesia (reminiscent of sleep-to-wake state transition). : nature.com/articles/s4159….🤩#20YearsInVivoMGImaging
Still in 2023, in a study led @SimonTSchafer from the Gage lab, a human brain-organiod-transplant-into-mice system was used to monitor human microglia in vivo. The beautiful system was used to model microglial dynamics in ASD: sciencedirect.com/science/articl….🤩#20YearsInVivoMGImaging
In 2023, in a study led by Gary Morris from the @BradASutherland lab, in vivo imaging was used to identify dynamically interacting pericyte-associated microglia (PEM) as a subset of capillary associated microglia (CAM) in the CNS: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.10….🤩#20YearsInVivoMGImaging

Still in 2021, in a study led by @Bishtkanchan8 from @eyolab, microglial soma interactions with the vasculature were described and shown to require vascular purine release from Panx1 channels to recruit microglia through P2RY12: nature.com/articles/s4146….🤩#20YearsInVivoMGImaging

Still in 2021, in a study led by @monique_ja44 from the Majewska lab, we observed the in vivo dynamics of depleting/repopulating (including proliferating) microglia during/following pharmacological CSF1R inhibition/its withdrawal: elifesciences.org/articles/61173.🤩#20YearsInVivoMGImaging
Still in 2021, in a study led by @eyolab et al. from @LongJun_Wu lab, we learned about microglial process pouches that wrap around injured dendrites following severe seizures and were suggested to provide neuroprotective functions:cell.com/cell-reports/f….🤩#20YearsInVivoMGImaging
In 2021, in a study led by Merlini et al. from the @AkassoglouLab, we learned that Gi signaling regulates microglial tissue surveillance which in turn functions to downregulate both neuronal activity and network hypersynchrony. nature.com/articles/s4159….🤩#20YearsInVivoMGImaging
In 2020, in a study led by Umpierre et al. @TonyUmpierre from @LongJun_Wu lab, we learned that microglial calcium activity is increased by both changing neuronal activity indicating bi-directional sensitivity to neuronal activity elifesciences.org/articles/56502….🤩#20YearsInVivoMGImaging
In 2019, in a study by Hasselmann et al. from @BlurtonJonesLab, we got a first glimpse of human microglia in vivo with incredible cellular resolution following xenotransplantation into mice and what a beauty they are: cell.com/neuron/fulltex….🤩 #20YearsInVivoMGImaging
Still in 2018, in a study led by Stowell et al., we learned through in vivo imaging that microglia show heterogeneity in their dynamics between the cortex & cerebellum with the larger shows remarkable brain patrol (translocation) onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.10….🤩 #20YearsInVivoMGImaging

Still in 2018, in a study led by @eyolab i.e. Eyo et al. from @LongJun_Wu's lab, a subset of microglia were shown to patrol the brain through soma migrations under P2RY12 control in basal, seizure and whisker trimmed conditions cell.com/cell-reports/f….🤩 #20YearsInVivoMGImaging
