"It appears early life got trapped in a minima of metabolic efficiency. Meaning they can’t run their brains for a full day-night cycle. So they just… turn themselves off. Their consciousness dies. Then they reboot with the same memories in the morning." theintrinsicperspective.com/p/they-die-eve…
“They’ve adopted a host of primitive metaphysics reassuring themselves they don’t die every day. They believe their consciousness outlives them, implying their own daily death, which they call ‘sleep,’ is not problematic at all”

We decided to do a screen time detox for our 3 year old. He had only been watching about an hour day here and there, but I am sorry to report that after 10 days with no screens, he has now started to open many more books that he previously ignored and is sitting for longer and…
This is easy to solve, as there's a "fiction" category for Substack newsletters. If most pieces come off as nonfiction and then add in made-up historical events and figures, etc, halfway through, just list in that category.
This is, apparently, fake. Many of the historical and legal details are just made-up, even the ones that purportedly relate to real politicians like Keir Starmer. I didn't realize this when I first read it; like most readers it seems, I just trusted that someone who wrote with…
🚨 According to a friend, the IMO asked AI companies not to steal the spotlight from kids and to wait a week after the closing ceremony to announce results. OpenAI announced the results BEFORE the closing ceremony. According to a Coordinator on Problem 6, the one problem OpenAI…
I appear to be in conversation with some sort of highly advanced model under the name of o3 (it is not o3). It may just be normal variance, but any reason to suspect they're testing something new?
Reading this now. Fantastic book about consciousness. Now at the Zomie-argument. Well explained. 👍
Happy pub day to this strange shimmery book of mine, The World Behind the World: Consciousness, Free Will, and the Limits of Science, which today is out in bookstores across America
We now have enough money to hire one part-time AI researcher
We've raised $100m in Series C funding for Substack. Thrilled to partner with @moodrowghani at @bondcap, TCG, plus @JensGrede, @RichPaul4, and @a16z
It could be that the default state for organisms is “sleep” & consciousness is a metabolic hack for ultra-low-power sparse just-in-time retrieval of models as response to low internal energy levels that might adaptively correlate to light-dark cycles. The hack is repurpose-able.

A great read, specially while participating in a @CatherineProj reading group of Calderon de la Barca’s “Life Is A Dream”

Omg more “writing ofs” please
THE “WRITING OF” POST - Had the realization a long time ago that “sleep, as the cessation of consciousness, is a kind of death” is a viable philosophical stance (not saying it’s correct, but it’s viable and interesting). - Realized it was a kind of cosmic horror. -…
I had a fairly severe fear of dying as a child, until I came to the same conclusion. A parent told me 'dying is just like going to sleep' to try and calm me down. It didn't, of course - I was up until four a.m. But when they woke me the next day, the fear was (and remains) gone.
sleep is not (only) about energy efficiency. it’s a bipolar tradeoff between hard realtime and fully consistent data integration we do not schedule database maintenance to save power.

I will "die" tomorrow - not physically, but I'm going under for another the big surgery, and be, despite panpsychist aspersions, the one object in the universe we know for a fact is not conscious: the human brain on Propofol.
Great story.
