I'll just add Ronald Cohen's The Kanuri of Bornu which describes raids conducted by Borno forces on non-Muslim groups in the Mandara Mountains and southern Chad and discusses high mortality during long-distance marches to Kukawa and the boys castrated en route for palace service
By the mid-to-late 19th century, some regions had been completely devastated by annual raids. For example the Tiv, who resisted Islamization, were subject to such frequent raids that they reportedly began killing or abandoning infants during escape to avoid capture.
