against all odds, the wild space yokel had been thrown into the elite of coruscant and had succeeded ♡ made with @GimmickBots
Still, Ar’alani struck him as a subtle sort of person. Maybe this was a test of his patience, or his willingness to enthusiastically obey even orders that seemed to make no sense. He’d certainly gone through a lot of such scenarios with Thrawn.
After all this time, they were finally promoting him to lieutenant. “—the rank—” Lieutenant Vanto. The sound in his head was like a drink of cool, clear water after a session in the dojo. Lieutenant Vanto… “—of lieutenant commander.”
“It’s a slang term for nonsense,” Vanto said. The left corner of his lip twists upward. “Especially nonsense that the speaker knows is nonsense.”
“I would never do anything to harm you, Vah’nya,” he said quietly. “You’re probably the only friend I have aboard the Steadfast, and I would give my life without hesitation to save yours.” He braced himself.
“I’m very good at it,” Vanto said. “Lieutenant Osteregi told me I’m one of the best cadets he’s ever had aboard. As soon as I finish my last term at the Academy, I’ll be guaranteed an assignment aboard a ship of the line.”
Vah’nya was the exception to all the rules. She was 22 years old, and unlike the children who shared her job she felt perfectly comfortable mixing with the rest of the adults aboard. Eli had seen and talked with her on a number of occasions, and had found her congenial company.
On top of all of Vah’nya’s other interesting qualities, she was the only person aboard he’d been able to persuade to call him by his real name. That alone would have earned her high marks in his book.
THRAWN: “Your son has done quite well. You should be very proud of him.”
KARYN FARO: And with Commander Eli Vanto’s unexplained disappearance from the Seventh Fleet still fueling the rumor mill, Faro was no longer sure where her future lay.
Eli winced. In general, not shooting into a civilian population was a perfectly sensible approach to combat. More sensible, in fact, than he would have expected from a lot of Imperial officers.
Ever since Uba and the lost tibanna, Thrawn had had a subtle but strong focus — Eli refused to call it an obsession, even in the privacy of his own mind — toward Nightswan.
“It’s the result everyone expected.” The glowing red eyes bored into Eli’s. “Everyone?” “Mostly,” Eli hedged. Yes, that was definitely what he might characterize as confusion.
She stepped close to Eli and wrapped him in a big hug. “Thank you for inviting us here, Eli. Let us know where they put you, and take care.”
Though considering that no one had apparently seen anything in the first place, the fact they didn’t now didn’t strike Eli as being very comforting.
Feeling like a fool, Eli stood up, brushed himself off as best he could, and walked over to his commander.
“I hope I’ll justify your confidence.” “I’m certain you will.” Thrawn cocked his head to the side.
THRAWN: Vanto stepped to the wall and looked up at the indicated mark. His forehead wrinkles with thought. His fingers hover over the mark as if he is mentally tracing it.
“Really,” Thrawn said. “Ensign?” Eli already had his datapad out. A quick search…
It was probably only five seconds. But to Eli it felt like a mediumsized eternity.
