This looks like a win for Filipinos. They don’t have to pay any tax on American products that they buy. But Americans are going to have to pay 19% tax on anything that comes from the Philippines. That’s an increase from 6% before Americans were “liberated.“

The tariff conversation is fascinating because the announcements really do *sound* like wins for the US. But in practice, this means Americans will pay a 19% tax on goods from the Philippines. Filipinos, meanwhile, will pay nothing on ours. America First?

This story is psychotic. Trump sent a group of people—many of whom entered the U.S. *legally*—to a notorious foreign mega-prison without due process, in part to free a convicted murderer. I don't understand how anyone who cares about the rule of law can support this.

If reports are accurate, US consumers will be pay a 15% tax on all products imported from Japan, up from 1.8% before Americans were “liberated” on 4/2/2025. We don’t yet know what tax Japanese consumers will pay on American goods. But it will likely be lower.
