GMO is trending again. But how about we skip the emotions and focus on what really matters? What’s the future of food in Nigeria? What does this mean for your health? What exactly is GMO, and has it come to stay? We’ll break it all down in this thread, so stick with us. 🧵

You sneeze. You leak. You laugh too hard. You leak. You bend to pick up your baby, and suddenly, your underwear is damp. This is common after birth. Let’s talk about what’s happening, and how NatalBond can help you take control 🧵
Thanks, for this. It's educative and I am here to learn. I'll choose based on nutritional value... I'll go for the local seeds
It’s interesting to see 👀 recent social media conversations in Nigeria catching up with what I had in mind 5 years ago. "THE EFFECTS OF GMOs ON HUMAN HEALTH" was the seminar topic I worked on for my final year back in 2019! You can read it here: bit.ly/4lOsMS0

Thanks for the enlightment. Your suggested solutions are brilliant. And this posts efficiently serves the last.
Yes, it's largely a regulatory gap. In Nigeria, although laws like the National Biosafety Act exist, GMO labeling isn't strictly enforced, so many products go unlabelled, even though they should be.
Why are they not labelled, is that not regulatory mishap ?
Science has shown that they are generally safe to eat and is believed to help with food security.
So in one sentence GMO is good for Africans to consume right?
Every farmer technically has a choice, but it’s not always a fair one. GMO seeds are often more accessible or aggressively marketed, while local seeds get less support, making small farmers feel like they have no real alternative.
Every farmer has a choice: GMO or Local Seed or is anybody being forced to use GMO?
Each approved GMO crop in Nigeria goes through a biosafety risk assessment to check for possible effects on human health, the environment, and local farming. However, these detailed reports are not easily available to the public, often due to limited public communication from…
What type of risk assessment was made for each of the GMO crops approved for cultivation? And why is the risk assessment is not available for the general public?
Small-scale farmers lose control when they depend on expensive GMO seeds they can’t reuse and must buy every season. Over time, this makes them rely on big companies for seeds and chemicals, reducing their freedom to farm on their own terms.
How does small scale farmers lose control of their farms?
GMO farming can lead to heavy use of herbicides, which may harm soil health over time by killing helpful microbes and reducing soil fertility. It can also encourage the growth of “superweeds” that are harder to control, making the soil harder to manage in the long run.
I was asking bout the adverse effects of gmo seeds/farming on our soil ?
- Not advisable to reserve GMO seeds for the next planting season, most are patented, and saving them is not allowed. - Yes, you can plant non-GMO seeds in soil previously used for GMO crops, but you’ll need to manage the soil well to avoid leftover chemicals or resistant weeds.
2 questions: 1. Can you reserve seeds from gmo yield for the next planting season just like our fathers used to, 2. Can you use a gmo used soil for non-gmo seeds planting in your next farming season?
GMO changes a plant’s DNA directly in the lab by adding specific genes, even from other species. Traditional farming or selective breeding, on the other hand, involves crossbreeding plants over time without altering their genetic structure in a lab.
Why is it different?
A must-read for fellow farmers: This situation is getting out of hand...

Fantastic thread... As an agrochemist, I worry bout the future of agriculture in Nigeria; imagine where u buy Cobra-26 Tomato for over 100k, u plant, it germinate, u harvest to sell/consume but can't plant anymore to recycle nature's gift? It's just crazy! But ofc dis is Nigeria!
Thanks for the clear explanation. LABELING is the main deal here.
