DEC Computers

Collector of vintage computer stuff from DEC, Compaq and HP (mid 80s - mid 2000s) Mainly Alpha, VAX, OpenVMS and DEC network stuff. Working on the dark side🇩🇪
One of the pictures of the #VAXserver 4000/300 from 2003. Unfortunately, the two R400X expanders no longer exist and the second machine is owned by someone else since 2004. However, I am looking for a second #VAX 4000/300 (or higher) and another expander.

Another purpose of the Windows XP system: planning the retro network with an appropriate software from the right era: Microsoft Visio 2003 Professional.
Something I haven't had or see for a long time: a dual-head Windows XP system.
It is possible that a short circuit is occurring elsewhere in the VAX during operation, so I am now testing other components as well. I'll start with the fans.

My CPU! It's a DEC KA694 from a VAX4000-705A. It runs at 112MHz and is about 95x as fast as the original VAX 11/780.
Each of these boards costs $52,800. This is what the largest single memory board, at 128MB, looked like in 1993, back when I started. This is for a DEC VAX 4000. It could carry four of them if you had a a quarter million dollars to spare. My own dev machine (a 486DX266) had…

I don't know if I can save everything. I got the handbook for the #DEC #HSC 50 and 70, but the last document is mouldy. It was still sealed in plastic, so the rest of the folder isn't affected. Let's see if I can remove it.

Already found a new suspect in the power supply unit of the VAX 4000/300. The capacitor is on the primary side, but is probably responsible for supplying power to the feedback circuit (it should actually be 1000µF).

My recent video about my failed attempts to get the power supply of the VAX 4000/300 working again. youtube.com/watch?v=rfNZeH…
Unfortunately, the VAX still turns off after a certain time, and I have not yet been able to find the issue in the power supply.
The VAX 4000/300 is running again...
This classic DEC PDP-8 was recently donated to the Rhode Island Computer Museum by Boston Financial and Equity Corporation and came from Sonny Monosson's American Used Computer. It was powered on Saturday for the first time in probably 50 years.
The #OpenVMS 6 documentation is now placed on the shelf, next to the documentation for VAX/VMS 3, VMS 5, OpenVMS 7, and #ULTRIX 32. Still missing are VAX/VMS 1 and 2 (unlikely to ever find them) and VAX/VMS 4 (apart from the three folders I have). Of course, RT-11, RSX-11, and…
And once again, my collection of DEC documentation is growing: now, a (probably) almost complete set of #OpenVMS 6 (for #VAX; OpenVMS for #AXP 1.5) documentation. The Programming series is complete, with a few books missing from the System Management and User series.

A few new #DEC #VAX booklets are now part of my collection

I've got my PDP-11/83 multibooting BSD UNIX, RT-11, RSX-11M, and the XXDP diagnostics. The machine will boot BSD off a big 14-inch RA82 hard drive. It can also boot from the SCSI bus, which has: 0 - QBone BSD Image 1 - JAZ Drive BSD 2-6 Other Systems The system compiles its…
The time has come to start repairing the VAX 4000/300 power supply. It has been broken for about two months.
