Programming note: LOW will soon return from its long hiatus with a truly deranged and unreadable post on James Michener, John Dos Passos, 1970s monoculture, the Nixon shock, utopianism, Le Corbusier, the internet, the sins of postmodernity and Denver’s River Mile district.
Story now available in Spanish: El representante Gabe Evans describió incorrectamente la historia de inmigración de su familia coloradonewsline.com/2025/07/24/rep…
Colorado Republican Rep. Gabe Evans has centered his pro-Trump political identity — and his support for mass deportation — on the story of his Mexican-American grandfather, who he has repeatedly said immigrated “the legal way.” Documents show that isn’t true.
Among the many questions Evans refused to answer for this story was whether these revelations about his grandfather would change how he talked about immigration issues going forward. One day later, the answer appears to be very much in the negative.
But INS documents obtained through records requests show that Cuauhtemoc Chavez, Evans’ grandfather, crossed the border illegally in 1929, lived unlawfully in the U.S. for at least the next 12 years, and was arrested for attempted burglary as a teenager. coloradonewsline.com/2025/07/22/u-s…

Evans' office stopped responding to inquiries and declined to answer a detailed list of questions we sent them repeatedly over the last week. CPR tracked him down on Capitol Hill today to finally get his response: cpr.org/2025/07/22/gab…
