Exoplanets & Exomoons, Cool Worlds Lab, Columbia University. Be kind to one another.
Next Jubilee. Eric Weinstein vs 20 theoretical physicists.
It’s easy to think there are too many scientists/biologists/astronomers/etc given how many more PhDs are granted today than say a century ago. But step into any field, and you will be *astonished* at how much basic work is left undone, we desperately need more scientists in fact!
Check out Jason's recent blog post about the Interstellar Comet 3I/ATLAS - and whether it could be a spacecraft

Not sure if anyone will see this here, but I wrote up some thoughts about 3I/ATLAS and Avi's latest claims at the other place: bsky.app/profile/astrow…
Ye, it’s called a transit…
Just in. NASA discovered a 'super Earth' exoplanet that is sending mysterious signal towards us. The planet, named TOI-1846 b, is almost twice the size of Earth and four times as massive, orbiting a red dwarf star 154 light-years away. It orbits a small, cool red dwarf star…
The best sleeping dream any New Yorker ever has is to discover there’s a secret extra room in your apartment that you never knew about.
It’s easy to forget that we live in a paradise. The Galaxy is largely a barren, frozen and unimaginably hostile landscape, yet it contains our world - a spectacular jewel of the cosmos.
This is a stunning reversal of fortunes for NASA from the US Senate - incredible job to all of you who wrote to your Senators!! This still has to go back to the House so make sure to let your Representatives know that you want this ratified.
🚨 NASA TO GET $279M top line *INCREASE* from Senate CJS. MORAN says "we were able to protect NASA Science". FY24 Enacted for NASA was $24.838B. Request was $18.809B. CJS Bill will have NASA at 24.9B
summary of proposed Senate funding for NASA & NSF coming out of the CJS afaik: 33.9 billion top-line number: -keeps SLS and Orion – “also funds NASA science and NOAA”, “important funding for NSF”. Will need to see the granular breakdown but looks ~flat budget vs FY24/25
At a conference dinner with five Anglo/European early career astrophysicists, I asked if what’s happening in the US has affected their career plans. They all said they are not even considering moving to the US as a result. Terrible news for US science.
I genuinely believe that science exploration is an essential lifeblood of a flourishing civilization, that progresses technology and provides inspiration to think beyond our imagined boundaries and see ourselves as a unified species. Without it, we will stagnate and regress.
What’s really at stake if NASA’s science budget gets slashed and entire science missions are canceled? We asked the scientists leading those missions, and their stories reveal what we all stand to lose. Here’s what they told us: planetary.org/articles/scien…
Proposal for future interstellar comet interceptor missions: Billionaire pays for a sample return mission, so they get a glass of water from another star system to serve at their dinner parties (and we get the science).
Billions of Exoplanets, Zero Aliens? This week, a rumination on UFO’s, disharmonious species, and extraterrestrials, inspired by Scientific Controversies: Aliens, a live event I hosted recently at Pioneer Works with astronomers Adam Frank and David Kipping.…
Some personal news! Next month I will be moving to the UK for a year for a sabbatical. I plan to do some writing, recharge my batteries, build new connections and make some great videos. Looking forward to seeing many of my long list British colleagues!
Distant comets/asteroids pack a hell of a punch, especially interstellar ones. Check out our latest video for more youtu.be/c4DyQl2v1rE
3rd interstellar object discovered? Maybe. There's a lot of buzz right now in the Astro community. More observations should come in tonight to confirm if A11pI3Z is from beyond the solar system.
$3,300,000,000,000 Stacked in a pile of dollar bills, that would 94% of the way to the Moon.

And so we plunge into darkness, a chapter of ignorance, and willful demotion of a great scientific nation
The US government is aiming to get rid of a quarter million people involved in science research and education by 2026. I have no words.

How can anyone hate solar energy??
