Meet the SkoBot, a language revitalization robot (a thread)
Are you calling and emailing your House Reps? Because many Tribal Colleges will cease to exist with the cuts in the “Big Beautiful Bill.” Tribal colleges are one of the few places where our Native languages are taught! It also cuts funding that supports tribal museums.
Ahhhh! I’m so thrilled to work alongside other young leaders as an @InsideNatGeo Young Explorer! We’re tackling challenges, seeking solutions, and working together for a better future. This honor will help me further my work developing my SkoBots. Miigwech. #NatGeoExplorer

A good reminder about AI and endangered Indigenous languages
It’s crazy that ChatGPT is capable of inventing new words that don’t exist in my endangered Indigenous language Anishinaabemowin. Indigenous languages must be handled with accuracy and care, and not be used to train tools like this from data scraping on the web
I don’t like AI summaries of my work or interviews. They never get Indigenous information correct. I am Anishinaabe 😂
Did you know that by 2050, only about 20 indigenous languages might remain in the U.S.? Danielle Boyer, a dynamic young inventor and member of the Nishé community, sees a bright yet cautious path for AI in helping preserve these languages. Read More: aiyaiyai.info/blog/can-ai-sa…
Erasing “DEI” apparently means erasing Native veterans from history. The contributions of the Navajo Code Talkers that ultimately won WWII with an unbreakable code is deleted from the Department of Defense website.
I post regularly on 🧵 now btw for people who want to join me there!
Big news! Delighted to have been selected as a @NatGeo Young Explorer, one of only 15 chosen globally this year! Becoming the 2nd Saudi to join @InsideNatGeo since its founding 137 years ago, and one of the firsts selected under their “Space” focus area 🔭 #NatGeoExplorer
People have been using my work to justify generative AI at events & press that I have not commented on or consented to recently. AI requires much nuance, but generative AI tools that are trained on stolen data and have no regard for cultural accuracies will never be the way
On this trans day of visibility let us be reminded that trans people have existed since before colonization and are still here. Being trans isn’t a new concept, and you’re on Indigenous land
Let's also discuss that AI data centers require a significant amount of power and WATER. Not only do a lot of Navajo people live without power, but also without access to running water. Not to mention how this will affect all people in AZ due to the region being in a megadrought
While Arizona is working to create more data centers to power Al and improve power infrastructure, they denied Navajo Nation support while many live without power

Got to bring my language revitalization robots to the @ndngirlsbookclb poetry lounge and land back fundraiser. Ndn Girls Bookclub is such a good resource for everyone curious about Indigenous books

OpenAl (who made ChatGPT) said that you can't train Al models without using copyrighted materials. What does this mean for artists, for creatives, for protected cultural information, and so many others when companies steal our data without our consent
Recently, non-Navajo people made an Al generated art series about a Diné girl who loves STEM. This really disappoints me because there are so many talented Diné artists to hire but they instead chose to use Al. Also, Diné stories should be told by Diné

While Arizona is working to create more data centers to power Al and improve power infrastructure, they denied Navajo Nation support while many live without power
OpenAI is afraid of copyright infringement and Studio Ghibli and Disney but not meddling with endangered Indigenous languages and creating inaccurate tools like Whisper based off materials they didn’t create that were NOT open source
