@SouthwestAir sucks. If I can fly another airline from now on, I will.
How can Trey Hendrickson and the Bengals end their contract standoff? Joel Corry (@corryjoel) has the answer with a proposal that makes sense for both sides. He even took into consideration the unique way the Bengals structure their contracts #Bengals cbssports.com/nfl/news/agent…

Thanks, @BigHops22!
Great read Joel. That puts a lot into perspective.
Based on Ja'Marr Chase's deal, traditional salary guarantees mean mediocre cash flow with a big final year salary to inflate the average. The path for Trey Hendrickson to get great cash flow is record upfront money for a non-QB with their preferred structure.
Bengals could guarantee more.

Interesting idea. Mark Murphy was a player rep for the Commanders who initially worked for the NFLPA after he retired.
Hey, NFLPA, do you want to level the playing field with NFL owners? How about hiring one of them? Long-time Packers CEO Mark Murphy is available next week. nbcsports.com/nfl/profootbal…
My take on how Trey Hendrickson & the Bengals should be able to find common ground on a new contract via @CBSSports. cbssports.com/nfl/news/agent…

It affects 2nd through 7th round picks in a contract year. Once a player has 4 accrued seasons (years of service for free agency), he doesn't need to earn another one. If Micah Parsons had held out, he would have been fine. He got 4 accrued seasons in his 1st 4 NFL seasons.
Are there other players in this situation too? Is this just something that affects players on rookie deals?
James Cook didn't have a choice about reporting to training camp on time. If he didn't, he wouldn't get a year of service for free agency no matter how many games he played this season. Cook would have been a RFA in 2026 after his rookie contract expired absent a new deal.
Bills RB James Cook will report to training camp amid contract talks, per @TomPelissero nfl.com/news/nfl-news-…
The change was with the 2011 CBA. Tag numbers initially decreased. Across the board, players are typically better off with the Cap Percentage Average method in most years recently.
I was thinking franchise to calculation had changed for whatever reason. So it's basically, I believe, the same calculation as the 2011 CBA?
The Bengals want to add “at any time during the contract” or something to that effect to the voiding language. It isn't in other previous Bengals contracts. Guarantees automatically void with a breach/default by the player.
So is the language they are seeking for Stewart intended to make the process more automatic to avoid lengthy appeals? Just seems like they are fighting for the ability to do something they already have the power to do.
July 15 would be the deadline to sign long term.
That would guarantee a holdout.
Trey Hendrickson isn't going to benefit from the pass rusher market escalation with a franchise tag. The 2021 through 2025 tags using the original methodology go into the formula.
The problem is, he would be getting the tag so early in Garrett's, and Watt's contracts that they actually work against him from the year before (2026 tag figured off of 2025 cap numbers, right?) Think something else but dont' remember
That should be part of Trey Hendrickson's decision-making process.
That's exactly why he doesn't want to play on this deal too right?
See the how non-exclusive franchise tags are calculated section in this franchise/transition tag FAQ I wrote a couple of years ago. It's too complicated to explain in one tweet. cbssports.com/nfl/news/agent…
I thought (rules may have changed) that you get an average of top 5 salaries at your position. With all of these DEs getting over 40 AAV, his number would only be 24?
On the bright side, at least Jerry Jones hasn't told a superstar player that he's going to regret paying him like Jerry Reinsdorf reportedly did with Michael Jordan shortly after making Jordan the NBA's highest paid player by a big margin during his final Bulls seasons.
Anytime you can publicly take a dig at your star quarterback and your star pass rusher simultaneously, right before the season begins, you just gotta take it… Nothing makes guys want to fight for you more than hearing how upset you are that they got hurt while fighting for you.
If Trey Hendrickson plays out his contract, he's probably getting a franchise tag. The number projects to right around $24M with a 2026 salary cap at nearly $303M.
From The Insiders on @NFLNetwork: The #Bengals and NFL sack leader Trey Hendrickson are in negotiations and while there was optimism from owner Mike Brown today, they aren’t there yet.
