@SouthwestAir sucks. If I can fly another airline from now on, I will.
There has to be more than meets the eye. Players have a CBA right to a 2nd medical opinion. The reasonable advice of the 2nd medical opinion doctor can be followed after giving the team doctor's recommendations due consideration.
You’d have to think so. Guarantees don’t mean anything if you can just decide someone isn’t rehabbing properly. I imagine there will be plenty more to come in terms of what else happened
I guess the Cowboys can't multi-task with contract negotiations since Micah Parsons recently said his agent can't get a call back from the powers that be.
The #Cowboys and standout TE Jake Ferguson have agreed to terms on a 4-year extension worth $52M in new money with $30M total guaranteed. The deal was done by agent Jack Bechta (@jackbechta). Ferguson gets a $12M signing bonus. Dallas takes care of a young star.
The answer to that question is in my Shemar Stewart article. I looked at the default language in plenty of contracts around the NFL, including the most relevant ones for the Bengals, before writing.
Makes one think there was likely also some compromise reached on the specifics of the guarantee void language that they’ve just agreed not to publicize.
It's not a common occurrence. Roquan Smith missed 2 weeks of training camp in 2018 until a compromise was reached on the number of games necessary in a suspension for violating NFL playing rules would trigger voiding.
It's really hard for me to believe they were fighting over 6 months of timing for $500k of the $10M bonus. Is such a trivial difference something teams/players/agents really fight over to this extent? Stewart lost a lot of valuable time.
I thought the Bengals needed to offer something instead of trying to ram the language down Shemar Stewart's throat. Given the constraints with rookie contracts, it was either no offsets for the guarantees or a better payment schedule. No offsets were never going to happen.
Hi Joel, this seems like a fair compromise. 5% more upfront is fair considering he ultimately had to sign. Thoughts?
I suspect it was just adding “at any time during the contract” or something to that effect into the default provision with each salary component that is guaranteed.
Would love to see the actual language that they elected to use once people get their hands on the contract to see how different it is in reality.
A better signing bonus payout was my suggestion for a resolution in last week's @CBSSports article. cbssports.com/nfl/news/agent…
The Bengals and Shemar Stewart have finally reached an agreement on the first-round pick's rookie contract. nbcsports.com/nfl/profootbal…
Under the CBA, 40% of the disputed amount is a salary cap charge. 40% of $35.25M is $14.1M. The Raiders will get a $14.1M salary cap credit by prevailing. It would reduce the $29.775M of 2026 dead money since a grievance hearing will likely take place in 2026.
Great info by @corryjoel . Much appreciated. Can you breakdown the dead cap hit if the Raiders win the case against Wilkins.
That does open up the possibility of guarantees voiding. The default language includes "does not honor any terms of the Contract (including any addenda thereto)" as what can be considered as a catch all provision.
I saw the part 8 in the addendum, the deadline missed leading to a breach in contract. That's why I am questioning the report of voiding the guarantees, but rather the breach led to the release.
Thanks to @YourboyQ254 & @AriProduces for having me on @RNR920AM.
40% of the disputed or claimed amount counts against a team’s salary cap with a player salary grievance until there’s a settlement or an award.
So they can still release him they will just have to pay all the guarantees and take the full cap hit which is about $45Million since it’s Post June, 1st?

That's why I wonder whether there is more to this situation than is being reported.
So, then how can they actually void the guarantees?
There's usually language in the addendums about failing to disclose an injury at signing being grounds for termination. I guess that's for an arbitrator to decide unless there's a big piece of this puzzle missing.
Isn't the spirit of that clause that the player is healthy & not hiding anything at the time of signing? Doesn't seem to apply to a future on the field injury or dispute over rehab thereof
The actual language in Christian Wilkins' addendums doesn't appear to give the Raiders grounds to void his guarantees based on what's known about this situation. That's why I said avoid paying.

I don't recall a team trying to use the physical condition clause of the standard player contract to avoid paying salary guarantees.
According to @TexansCap, there’s a violation of Paragraph 8 of a standard contract.
I'm wondering whether there are some key details that aren't public.
Are there enough details yet to forecast how the grievance will play out?
Not with this particular circumstance or a similar one.
@corryjoel can you think of other players this has happened to?
How can Trey Hendrickson and the Bengals end their contract standoff? Joel Corry (@corryjoel) has the answer with a proposal that makes sense for both sides. He even took into consideration the unique way the Bengals structure their contracts #Bengals cbssports.com/nfl/news/agent…
