Significant concessions may have spared the Govt a Commons defeat, but lessons are desperately needed to be learned. Rushed, flawed proposed legislation having undergone poor consultation is not how to radically reform broken inherited systems. We must deliver better than this.
Whatever people’s views about the concessions, surely everyone can see the process here is ALL wrong? Third Reading in eight days? A timetable like that diminishes the role of MPs in getting this legislation right, shuts out disabled people and puts too many at risk.
Another 11th-hour amendment, yet the vote tonight remains on the Bill as-is. Trust weakened, anxiety not quelled in communities, questions still unanswered. Pull the Bill, revisit, and bring it back - coproduced and fit for purpose.
