Condensed Matter Theory Center (CMTC) at @UofMaryland is a research center for condensed matter physics.
1. Thread on topological quantum computing (TQC). TQC is a radical approach to quantum computing where the individual topological qubits (Tqb) are intrinsically protected against decoherence by physics, making quantum error correction unnecessary. #quantum #QuantumComputing
After spending 4 productive years at CMTC, Dr. Ming Xie is moving onto the next stage of his academic career as an assistant professor at UT, Dallas-- we wish him the best! He will be in the illustrious family of >100 CMTC members who are physics faculty members in 5 continents

CMTC is neither parochial nor particularly loyal as our loyalty is reserved for science and our students/postdocs-- still this 'bragging' about UMD caught our attention "UMD Among Top 5 Doctorate Producers in 5 Critical Tech Areas" including QUANTUM ! cmns.umd.edu/news-events/ne…
Perhaps in a world where bitcoins are priced >$10^5, QC hype is perfectly sensible. At least its asymptotic value is not zero, and it can in principle do integer factorization infinitely faster than classical computers, which will bring cryptos down to their asymptotical value=0
Examples of nonsense from banks with no QC expertise:"quantum computer (QC) can perform in one second what would take a human 50 quintillion years QC with just 10 qubits can outperform classical computing systems 100fold QCs also consume far less power" No immortality promise yet

Quote of the day from @WSJ : “It’s kind of ridiculous to say, but it’s sort of between three or four billion light years away and 12 to 13 billion light years away,” referring to the black hole merger event GW231123 arXiv:2507.08219 Amazing how precise laser inteferometry is!

Another important result was presented by @MIT_Physics Long Ju on the 5-RHG, finding that the with-moire RHG manifests QAHE/FQAHE, but the without-moire RHG manifests only SC This paves the way for new ideas on the role of moire, and likely eliminates the Hall crystal possibility
Highlights from QD100 conference in San Sebastian: @Microsoft Quantum presented 6 talks focusing on their recent posting on X and Z gate measurements in the 2-wire 4-MZM tetron structure, and the results look promising with improvement in SNR and device quality arXiv:2507.08795

Just published @PhysRevB , many body localization in a new class of 1D lattice models with mobility edges, the first CMTC publication by our youngest PhD student Zijian who is just in his first year of graduate study arxiv.org/abs/2503.22096 journals.aps.org/prb/abstract/1…

Our AI-Master Jacob found a creative way of using the vision transformer in analayzing and mitigating detrimental disorder effects in quantum materials and quantum computing
@PhysRevB Letter arXiv:2502.12121 ('Topology from Nothing') by our PhD student Jacob showing how to remove disorder to bring out the underlying topology in Majorana nanowires similar to shoveling snow off the driveway. Editors enforced a boring title journals.aps.org/prb/abstract/1…
Is this true?Sure, if the lie is claiming a 'perpetual machine'or'speeding through the light velocity',but what if it is just a common lie of everyday life,e.g., a thief claiming he did not steal or a child claiming she did not break something! Will physics ever see through this?
Physics sees through all lies perfectly
CMTC Twitter account is completing its 5th year. Among the highlights are the first scientific takedown of LK99 claim/hype-- we were of course 100% correct-- the 'discovery' papers never appeared in journals, and detailed discussions of quantum computing with emphasis on TQC
