Talked to Don Kelly and Liover Peguero about the 11th inning, a play that was magnified because the Pirates were shut out for a 14th time and didn’t have a hit for the final 9 innings. That, plus Mike Burrows’ start and more on the offense in my takeaways:post-gazette.com/sports/pirates…

Don Kelly said the play in the 11th was a “completely in-between play.” If it one-hopped and Peguero tagged, he’d be thrown out. If it was caught in the air, it’s too shallow to tag. Only way he scores is if the fielder falls, which he did. Kelly added they’d study it further.

Ballgame. The Pirates lose to the Diamondbacks 1-0 in 11 innings, their 14th shutout loss of the season. They had a season-low one hit, even with six extra outs. Liover Peguero probably should have tagged in the 11th, but the Pirates didn't do enough offensively all night.

Mike Burrows is done. He was excellent. Isaac Mattson is in for the seventh, where he'll start with Eugenio Suarez. Burrows' line: 6.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 Ks. 86 pitches (two shy of his MLB high), 62 strikes. Longest and best start of Burrows' career so far.

Diamondbacks are looking for a spark against Mike Burrows, so Corbin Carroll just tried to turn a routine grounder up the middle into a hustle double. Oneil Cruz made a strong and accurate throw to get Carroll at second. Burrows is through six scoreless on 86 pitches.

The Pirates signed two more draft picks today, signing prep products McLane Moody and Carter Gwost. Moody, a RHP committed to Arkansas, was taken in the 15th round. Gwost, an OF committed to Nebraska, was the Pirates’ 17th round draft pick. The Pirates have signed 18/21 picks.

Very solid outing from Johan Oviedo here in Altoona. 5.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 0 BBs, 5 Ks on 63 pitches. Run came in the first on a broken-bat single misplayed into an RBI triple. Oviedo struck out the last two he faced and retired 13 of the last 15. Fastball velo was up to 97.

Hello from Altoona. Johan Oviedo pitches for the Curve today, so I’m here to watch him, talk to some Pirates prospects, and make sure Esmerlyn Valdez is alive. As for that last one, can confirm Valdez is doing well. He told me he’s planning on being back in the lineup tomorrow.

NEWS: Pirates second round pick Angel Cervantes commits to UCLA instead of signing an MLB contract. Cervantes’ projected slot value was $1,934,700. Major surprise that they couldn’t find a deal.
