My latest: A daughter with DACA, a mother without papers, and a goodbye they can’t bear miamiherald.com/news/local/imm…
Miami-Dade schools are set to lose $45M in federal funding for migrant students, teacher development, and English learners. The cuts come amid a sweeping rollback of education grants by the Biden admin. My latest for the @MiamiHerald: miamiherald.com/news/local/edu…
NEW: Alligator Alcatraz isn’t meant for minors. A 15 year old ended up there anyway. State and federal officials initially deflected questions about the boy being held at the facility, but eventually acknowledged he had been there. w @clurhealy miamiherald.com/news/politics-…
Insanity
🚨 Miami-Dade schools are missing $35 MILLION just weeks before school starts. Frozen funds are putting support for 83,000+ English learners at risk. The superintendent has already cut spending — and says he’s taking the fight to Tallahassee and D.C. miamiherald.com/news/local/edu…

The Trump admin gutted the Citizenship and Integration Grant Program, which supported local governments running citizenship classes for people with green cards looking to learn English and pass the citizenship test. Once again; it's not about "legal" vs. "illegal."
BREAKING: Miami-Dade just killed its citizenship classes for immigrants. For decades, these classes helped thousands prepare for the exam. miamiherald.com/news/local/edu…
NEW: The @MiamiHerald obtained records that give insight into who is being held at the Alligator Alcatraz. A list of roughly 750 names marks about: ◾️250 with immigration violations ◾️260 with pending criminal charges ◾️240 with criminal convictions miamiherald.com/news/local/imm…
The DeSantis administration, for instance, is staffing the facility with private correctional officers who haven’t had to submit to fingerprinting, pass a physical exam, or pass background checks...
One thing is quickly becoming clear about “Alligator Alcatraz,” the immigrant detention camp that the state of Florida just opened in the middle of the Everglades: The politicians running the place are bigger lawbreakers than many of the immigrants they’re locking up. 🧵...
Florida test scores are up. But is that real progress — or just a new test? Experts say the state’s FAST exam is too new to draw long-term conclusions. My latest for @miamiherald miamiherald.com/news/local/edu…
Florida lawmakers denied access to detention camp in the Everglades because of “safety concerns”, but those safety concerns do not extend to those detained there or the president of the United States who got a tour yesterday. There is also no running water or plumbing.
Alligator Alcatraz to receive first immigrant detainees tonight. We will keep you updated here: miamiherald.com/news/local/imm…
And now it's time to focus on the school funding - and quality education issue - more broadly and boldly - per: miamiherald.com/news/local/edu… @clarasophiadaly @JeffSolochek [noting that reporting on the issue to inform the public helps! a lot!]
Chalk one up to people power -- to Floridians of all political stripes banding together and telling GOP lawmakers: We're not going to stand for this assault on public education. Let's hope this isn't the last time. orlandosentinel.com/2025/06/20/flo…
Nice reporting on Florida education funding miamiherald.com/news/local/edu… @clarasophiadaly Long, steady downhill slide in a state that can and should do much better!
The education budget has been finalized. Funding for private school vouchers continue to proliferate as traditional public schools see increases below the level of inflation. Education leaders are concerned. Lawmakers celebrate the new budget. miamiherald.com/news/local/edu…
Thank you @clarasophiadaly for being interested in telling the story of #ProjectAda. I loved how your article highlighted how it is community that also wanted to do this. A big group of people decided to team up and help these teen moms and I’m so happy. miamiherald.com/news/local/edu…
