An average of 28 children have been killed each day since the start of the war in Gaza – the equivalent of an entire classroom, every day for 21 months. "These children are not combatants,” says @unicefchief. "They suffer greatly and they wonder why the world has failed them."
Teachers — the #SummerReadingChallenge is a brilliant way to keep pupils reading over summer. Hear from two primary teachers about why they champion it every year, and how it helps pupils return in September more confident & motivated. 🔗 readingagency.org.uk/how-to-keep-ch… #StoryGarden

Dear Publishing people, Please don't turn this into a National Year of Marketing for the same wealthy demographic who already love reading, but maybe shift the focus to those less well off and who don't enjoy reading ... yet. Just a polite request. Thank you.
Big news! 2026 has officially been announced as the National Year of Reading by @bphillipsonMP. We’re proud to join @educationgovuk to lead this national campaign to get the UK reading again. #NationalYearOfReading2026 nationalyearofreading.org.uk

Nowadays, hope can seem hard to find. I see hope in activists raising their voices for human rights, in humanitarian heroes overcoming obstacles to help the most vulnerable. And I see hope in the @UN, where countries address the world’s biggest challenges together.…
Utterly glorious!
40 years ago, my favourite teacher put a painting of a battle on the wall. He told us to take our time imagining we were inside it and thinking about smells and sounds, and the emotions we felt, then to write a story. I wrote the best story I had ever written...

Just wondering … On a really, really hot day, when no one else is in the house, is it common practice for someone to open the fridge and, for just a little while, rest their bare bum cheeks on the shelf next to the vegan chicken free slices?
My new book 'When the War Comes In' is set in my hometown of Wallsend where Sting also grew up. This is the house where he lived in as a boy, just a stone's throw away from shipyard which plays a vital part in my story. I think they missed a trick by not calling it 'Woksanne'.
