Ostrich sisters ‘Vivian’ and ‘Ethel’ are turning 19! 🎉 Ostriches can’t fly, but they aren't slow! Thanks to their long legs, ostriches can cover 10 feet in a single stride. Clocking speeds of 70 kilometres per hour, they are the fastest two-legged animal! 💨 #YourZooYYC

Female rock hyrax ‘Kikami’ is five today! 🤘🎉 Rock hyraxes may be small, but they’re loud! This species is known for its piercing calls, which include screams, grunts, snorts, and squeaks. 🗣️ Stop by the African Savannah Building to wish Kikami a happy birthday! #YourZooYYC

Wait…that’s not a tortoise! Our spur-winged lapwing chicks have moved into the Rainforest Building’s tortoise habitat! After being raised behind the scenes, they’re now sharing space with spur-winged lapwing ‘Matle’, leopard tortoise ‘Sheldon’, & pancake tortoise ‘Flap Jack’.

A second southern bald ibis chick successfully fledged in the African Rainforest Aviary! 👏 Sire 'Kafue' (pictured) and dam 'Malawi' have been feeding the chick well, and we have seen the chick grow in confidence as it gradually begins to explore the aviary. ❤️ #YourZooYYC

Male Egyptian tortoise ‘Nalut’ (right) is 13 today! 🎊 Nalut shares an enriching mixed-species habitat with fellow Egyptian tortoises and our rough-scaled plated lizards. In the wild, this species shares a habitat with desert monitor lizards and ravens! 🦎🐦⬛ #YourZooYYC

It’s #WatermelonWatchWednesday! 🍉 Wondering what our Malayan tapir calf will eat? After birth, it’ll nurse within hours—2–3 times daily. By 2 weeks, it will start eating solids like hay & produce! 🍼 Stay tuned for more updates as we await the birth of #WatermelonBabyYYC! 🤍🖤

Today’s #HumpDay is extra special — we’re welcoming a new member to our Bactrian camel caravan! 🐫 Meet ‘Stretch’, a 10-year-old male. He’s now settling in and getting to know his new habitat companions: 20-year-old ‘Zsa Zsa’ and 9-year-old ‘Marshie’. #YourZooYYC

🎉 We’re celebrating two tortally wonderful hatchdays! Egyptian tortoise ‘Giza’ turned one on July 8th, while ‘Sphinx’ turned one on July 18th! 🥳 Egyptian tortoises reach maturity at five years, and as of now, we haven’t determined their sexes. 🐢 #YourZooYYC #TwoTinyTorts
Calgary Transit Maintenance Alert 📢 Maintenance will impact the Blue Line, making service to Zoo Station unavailable from 8 p.m. on Friday, August 8, through to the end of Sunday, August 10. A bus will operate between Bridgeland Station and the North Parking Lot. #YourZooYYC

We have spud-tacular news to share! 👏 On Monday, July 14, first-time rock hyrax mom ‘Kikami’ successfully gave birth to one healthy pup, and the next day, second-time mom ‘Oshana’ successfully delivered three more. All four pups were sired by ‘Kenickie’ (pictured). #YourZooYYC
