One of the most important moments in the history of Christianity was its legalisation within the Roman Empire in 313 AD. Before then, Christians had been persecuted throughout Roman territory, where it was Emperors and the pagan pantheon that were considered divine. (1/3)
Very good for Italy in the short term (1-5 years), very bad for Italy in the medium term (once Justinian scraped up an army to throw at Belisarius), unknown prognosis for the long term health of the Roman state (too many variables).
What do you think would have happened if Belisarius became a new Western Roman Emperor based in Italy? Would it have been good or bad for Roman civilization?
