A real loss for astronomy! I am hoping you’ll be back, but worried that google will like you so much that they will make it hard for you to leave.. Do keep your independence.
Today is my last day as a professional astronomer, and I already miss all the wonderful people who I have had the immense privilege of working with over the past 15 years. But, I'm excited for what comes next, and y'all know where to find me: github.com/google/jax ❤️
In 2015, we ran a workshop on "Drawing causal inference from Big Data" at the NAS. Back then, “Big Data” felt like a buzzword. Ten years later, we might finally have a method to make it real.
We believe that Do-PFN can provide causal insights on diverse and understudied problems where experimental data is scarce! This is joint work with @Arik_Reuter (shared), @syguoML, @noahholl, @FrankRHutter, @bschoelkopf Checkout the paper at: arxiv.org/abs/2506.06039 (7/7)
CLeaR has became a top venue for Causality and ML - this year in beautiful Lausanne.
Interested in Causality and its many applications? Welcome to #CLeaR2025 in May 7-9 in Lausanne, Switzerland! Organized by Profs Negar Kiyavash, Jin Tian, Mathias Deron, Biwei Huang & many great committee members! Early-bird registration is now open: cclear.cc/2025/VenueandR…
This is an intriguing development - tabular data is harder that images or text in that each entry can mean something different.
The data science revolution is getting closer. TabPFN v2 is published in Nature: nature.com/articles/s4158… On tabular classification with up to 10k data points & 500 features, in 2.8s TabPFN on average outperforms all other methods, even when tuning them for up to 4 hours🧵1/19
Welcome to the institute - an exciting time to join!
🎉 Announcing New Principal Investigators at ELLIS Institute Tübingen! 🎉 We are excited to share that Dr. T. Konstantin Rusch and Dr. Shiwei Liu will join us as Principal Investigators and Hector Endowed Fellows in 2025. They will also take on roles as Independent Research…
🇨🇦 🇪🇺 ELLIS and @CIFAR are joining forces to expand the ELLIS PhD & Postdoctoral Program in AI CIFAR Fellows and Canada AI Chairs will join ELLIS advisors, connecting PhD students with top AI researchers across Europe & North America. Learn more here: bit.ly/4hFvurq
Exciting news! Finland to establish the 2nd ELLIS Institute, supported by gov't & industry. 🇫🇮Coordinated by @FCAI_fi, @AaltoUniversity & ELLIS Unit Helsinki, this initiative strengthens Europe's AI ecosystem. #ELLISforEurope bit.ly/3YuuIoa
Can I re-post this replacing Geoff->Demis and Physics->Chemistry? Science is there to stay.
Geoff and John are a truly inspired choice for the Nobel Prize in Physics. Not only because they have done groundbreaking work for machine learning research, but also since this choice reflects an understanding that machine learning methods are changing how science is done (1/2)
A talk about #xLSTM, by Maximilian Beck, first author of the xLSTM paper and @ELLISforEurope PhD student.
@bschoelkopf’s fascinating talk at the @ELLISforEurope ELISE wrapup conference. Full room!! ✨✨🙌
Fascinating visitors at our institute this week, with a CIFAR workshop & a scientific symposium for the upcoming ELLIS institute opening (1/2)

A new image released from the Large Binocular Telescope showing Jupiter's moon Io. The sharpest ever taken from a ground based telescope and well beyond what even HST has produced. From Earth Io spans around 1 arc second across. news.berkeley.edu/2024/05/30/wit…
The Oberwolfach Research Institute for Mathematics (MFO) was also the location of the latest #ELLISProgram workshop on Interactive Learning and Interventional Representations. Check out this detailed recap by Giorgia Ramponi @gio_ramponi: ifi.uzh.ch/en/alpi/blog.h…

Check out this thought-provoking piece by Léon Bottou and @bschoelkopf entitled "Borges and AI".
Can LLMs pass 𝐂𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐞𝐬𝐭? In our #NeurIPS2023 paper “CLadder: A Benchmark to Assess Causal Reasoning Capabilities of LMs”, we test LLMs on the Pearl's 3 Rungs of Causality, and found that LLMs are *far* from solving them.➡️arxiv.org/abs/2312.04350
Want to do a PhD in ML, consider applying to the fully-funded Cambridge - Tübingen PhD Fellowship. From personal experience supervised by @fhuszar and @bschoelkopf, this is the best PhD out there! ei.is.mpg.de/news/cambridge… Deadline: noon, Dec 5th.
Help us build the ELLIS Institute: the new call for Hector Endowed PI positions is at tue.ellis.eu/jobs/PI2024. The positions come with the possibility for co-appointment at Max Planck & Tübingen AI Center #ELLISforEurope #Tuebingen #AI @MPI_IS
Good news for France, for Europe, and I hope also for the world. Happy to support it and work together closely in Europe.
We are also super grateful to benefit from the support of our Scientific Advisory Board: Yejin Choi (@YejinChoinka), Bernhard Schölkopf (@bschoelkopf) and Yann LeCun (@ylecun). We are actively hiring and building our first models. Stay tuned.
